Job summary

Cameron County seeks a Light Equipment Operator to perform maintenance and construction of road and drainage infrastructure. The role involves operating a range of equipment, inspecting and maintaining gear, and assisting with culvert and ditch work in a Civil Service setting.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED; plus two (2) years experience in technical/repair work operating light to heavy road construction equipment.
• Texas Class C driver's license required.
• Equivalent combination of education, training or experience may satisfy the requirements.

Responsibilities

• Operates and maintains light to heavy road construction equipment to build and maintain streets and drainage structures.
• Assists and checks damaged equipment with daily inspections and safety checks.
• Estimates materials needed for construction or repair of roads and culverts; performs minor maintenance on equipment.
• Installs culverts and handles ditch work; operates backhoe and excavator for shoulder widening and drainage cleaning.
• Provides flagger assistance on road projects and uses power tools safely; assists with cleanup.
• Maintains tools and machinery in good condition; may operate heavy equipment on occasion.
• On-call/on-duty as needed to assist community during severe weather events.
