Job summary

The City of Asheville is seeking qualified applicants for Equipment Operator II in Public Works. You will operate heavy equipment for road, sidewalk, and storm drainage projects, and perform related manual labor and safety tasks.

Qualifications include a High School diploma or GED, a year of construction experience, and a Class B CDL with endorsements (or ability to obtain). CDL-related safety certs or the ability to obtain within 180 days are required.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required, with experience in construction preferred.
• At least one year of construction experience; or equivalent combination of education/training/experience enabling heavy equipment operation.
• Must possess and maintain a Class B CDL with endorsements, or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire.
• Must possess and maintain Flagger and Work Zone and Safety certification, or ability to obtain within 180 days of hire.

Responsibilities

• Operates equipment and vehicles for maintenance, repair, and construction of roads, sidewalks, storm drainage, and other city infrastructure.
• Drives dump trucks and loads/unloads materials safely and efficiently.
• Operates skid steers, backhoe-mounted loaders, and similar equipment.
• Performs routine field maintenance and safety checks on equipment.
• Assists in snow and ice removal with snow plow trucks and spreaders.
• Performs manual labor tasks such as digging, lifting, loading, and transporting materials.
• Follows safety procedures, communicates with supervisors, and completes required forms and reports.
