Job summary

Beaufort County Public Works is seeking hands-on personnel to assist in coordinating projects, operate heavy and medium equipment, and perform manual tasks associated with road and drainage systems. The role involves leading crews, inspecting work, and ensuring safety and efficiency in daily operations.

Eligible applicants must have a high school diploma or GED, 2–4 years of related experience, and a valid state commercial driver’s license.

  • Over two years and up to four years of related experience.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid state commercial driver's license.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates, assigns and reviews work and establishes work schedules; maintains standards; monitors status of work in progress; inspects completed work assignments; answers questions; gives advice and direction as needed.
  • Leads and performs routine maintenance on the County's roads, including operating chainsaws, weed eaters, earth compactors, preparing site-mixed concrete and County vehicles including small dump trucks.
  • Unclogs drainage with various equipment and vehicles, including vac truck and excavators.
  • Cleans debris from drainage systems.
  • Operates heavy and light equipment to construct, reconstruct and maintain roads and drainage systems.
  • Checks for and repairs sinkholes.
  • Inspects work in progress to ensure conformance with instructions.
  • Records daily reports such as walk around inspections, daily worksheets and daily log books.
  • Inspects equipment.
  • Performs site safety and provides traffic control.
  • Supervises the maintenance, cleaning, and repair of equipment.
  • Performs related work as assigned.

Job description

The purpose of this position is to assist in the coordination of projects, operate heavy and medium equipment and perform manual work associated with the operations of an assigned Public Works’ division.

The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

  • Coordinates, assigns and reviews work and establishes work schedules; maintains standards; monitors status of work in progress; inspects completed work assignments; answers questions; gives advice and direction as needed.
  • Leads and performs routine maintenance on the County's roads which may include operating chainsaws to cut trees and limbs, operating commercial weed eaters and earth compactors, preparing site-mixed concrete and operating County vehicles to include small dump trucks.
  • Unclogs drainage with various equipment and vehicles, including vac truck, excavators, etc.
  • Cleans debris from drainage systems.
  • Operates heavy and light equipment to construct, reconstruct and maintain roads and drainage systems.
  • Checks for and repairs sinkholes.
  • Inspects work in progress to ensure conformance with instructions.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
  • Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent.
  • Over two years and up to and including four years of related experience.
SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:
  • Must possess and maintain a valid state commercial driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.
