Job summary

The State of South Carolina DMV is seeking a License Examiner I to join the Winnsboro branch. You will administer road tests across multiple vehicle classes, review and edit applicant documents, and issue licenses, permits and registrations. Strong customer service and accuracy are essential in this role.

Responsibilities include handling inquiries, welcoming customers, collecting fees, and maintaining equipment. Occasional outdoor testing and a requirement to pass a background check apply.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Valid South Carolina driver’s license and be at least 21 years of age with one year driving experience.
• Must complete a nationwide criminal background check to include fingerprinting.
• Before being certified to administer CDL knowledge skill tests must complete a formal CDL test examiner trainer course and examination that includes Introduction to CDL Licensing System, Overview of the CDL Tests and Knowledge Tests.

Responsibilities

• Administers road test examinations for multiple vehicle classes (A–F, M, CDL where applicable).
• Performs applicant document review, edits names/addresses, processes registrations and licenses.
• Answers customer inquiries about driver, vehicle, and registration requirements by phone or in person.
• Greets and directs customers to appropriate areas within the office.
• Collects fees and donations, reconciles daily reports, and handles vehicle records updates.
• Performs routine maintenance on equipment and handles office errands including mail and bank deposits.
