Job summary

York County is hiring a full-time Road Technician I in South Carolina to operate heavy equipment for asphalt repairs and roadway paving. The role involves loading and hauling materials, setting up traffic control, and performing routine maintenance on vehicles and tools.

The position requires a High School diploma or GED, at least one year of related experience, and a valid CDL B license (Class A preferred). FEMA 100/200 certifications are also requested.

Job description

We are hiring a full-time (40 hours weekly), non-exempt Road Technician I with Road Maintenance. The purpose of this position is to operate heavy equipment for asphalt repairs and roadway paving. Repairs, adds stone or gravel to county dirt roads.

Projected Salary Range/Pay Grade 111:$20.60 - $24.72 per hour. Salary is determined based on qualifications.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Performs a variety of maintenance tasks using vehicles, heavy equipment and machinery.
  • Operates heavy vehicles and equipment to load, haul or move materials, dirt and debris; drives a truck to transport heavy equipment and required materials and tools to job sites.
  • Performs preventive maintenance, cleaning, and minor repairs of equipment, machinery, and tools; inspects equipment regularly for proper and safe operating condition.
  • Sets up road construction sites to control traffic flow during work based on the guidelines set by the South Carolina Department of Transportation, municipalities, counties, and contractors. May work as traffic control flag man.
  • Responds to after-hours emergency calls as required; works on call for duty in inclement weather conditions and on holidays as necessary.
  • Assists workers in other County Departments and divisions with maintenance tasks as necessary.
  • Performs related work as assigned.
Minimum Education and Experience:
  • High School Graduation or GED equivalent.
  • One year of operating construction heavy equipment or related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Certifications and Licenses:
  • Must possess and maintain a valid state CDL B with an acceptable driving history. Class A preferred
  • FEMA I C 100 and 200.

Physical Demands:
  • Performs medium work that involves walking, standing, stooping, jumping, lifting, digging, pushing and raising objects and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis and 50 to 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis.

  • Bright/dim light; Dusts and pollen.
  • Extreme heat and/or cold; Wet or humid conditions.
  • Extreme noise levels, Animals/wildlife.
  • Vibration; Fumes and/or noxious odors.
  • Traffic; Moving machinery.
