Job summary

York County Government is hiring a Firefighter Paramedic to join the Fire Services Department. This full-time, non-exempt role follows standard medical protocols and emergency response procedures, supporting fire suppression and rescue operations as directed by the company officer.

Compensation is $26.29 - $31.55 per hour, dependent on experience and education. Work schedule is Monday to Friday, 8:30 am – 4:30 pm, with opportunities for professional development.

Job description

We are excited to hire a Firefighter Paramedic to join our team in the Fire Services Department! This position is full-time (40 hours weekly), non-exempt.

The purpose of this position is to follow standardized medical protocols, operational guidelines, and structured emergency response procedures set by the department. Follow approved treatment algorithms, and during fire suppression or rescue operations, carry out tasks assigned by the company officer to ensure coordinated and safe operations.

Projected Salary Range/Grade 116:

$26.29 - $31.55 per hour. Salary is dependent on experience and education.

Work Schedule:

Monday – Friday, 8:30 am – 4:30 pm

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Responds to calls for fire, medical, hazmat, rescue and other natural and/or man-made emergencies. Carries out commands and tasks necessary to mitigate the emergency safely and efficiently.
• Responds to and provides medical assistance at dispatched or observed medical emergencies or accidents, where there exists the possibility of further injury, loss of limb, death, or where such services are in the public interest.
• Maintains a high level of sanitation in assigned vehicle in accordance with infection control standards.
• Prepares required records and reports relating to locations, persons assisted, conditions found, measures taken, and services provided including information for billing purposes.
• Provides appropriate assistance to hospital emergency room personnel within the guidelines of department directives.
• Cleans and maintains equipment: Bunker gear cleaning, Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus maintenance, Industrial Firefighting Equipment, Pump Service, Hose Testing, Extrication Equipment, etc.
• Performs station cleaning and maintenance duties: windows and overhead doors; dormitories; apparatus floors; equipment and tools; kitchen; brass cleaning of fire poles; floors stripped, waxed, and buffed. Performs fire suppression activities to combat, and extinguish fires at a fire scene, including laying and/or connecting hose, directing water, raising and climbing ladders.
• Enters, searches, and extricates individuals from burning structures and removes dangerous/damaged structures/furniture and fixtures.
• Performs routine maintenance of assigned vehicles including checking tools, equipment, supplies and materials of each vehicle including all fire suppression and emergency medical response to ensure that vehicles are in proper operating condition.
• Performs a variety of emergency rescue activities at fire, accident, hazardous material, or other emergency situations.
• Provides basic/advanced life support and administer basic/advanced emergency medical care and pre-hospital first aid care to individuals when at an emergency scene.
• Participates in regular training/drills programs and a variety of community service activities.
• Presents fire prevention/safety programs to school groups, civic groups/organizations and the general public to discuss techniques, and practices.
• Completes incident documentation in accordance with established policies and procedures and maintain department records of local business renderings to facilitate the efficient response and suppression activities.
• Performs daily check/inspection of personal fire suppression gear, protective clothing and related equipment to ensure proper functioning and cleanliness.
• Performs related work as assigned.

Minimum Education and Experience:

• Requires an Associate’s degree, vocational technical degree or specialized training that is equivalent to satisfactory completion of two years of college education.
• Two years in fire suppression, emergency medical services or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Special Certifications and Licenses:

• Valid driver's license Class E is required, Class B preferred.
• National Registry Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic (EMT-P) Certification
• Requires the following certifications:
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
  • Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS).
  • Firefighter I and II
  • Hazardous Materials Operations, and
  • Vehicle Extrication
  • Valid driver's license Class E is required, Class B preferred

Physical Demands:

• Performs very heavy work that involves constantly lifting, shoveling, and carrying 50 to 75 pounds on a regular and recurring basis and exerting 100 pounds of force on a frequent basis.
