Richland County Government is seeking an Equipment Operator I for the PW Ballentine Camp Office. The role involves operating heavy machinery to build and repair roads, maintain rights‑of‑way, and support multiple divisions.

CDL with endorsements is required, with permit and endorsement timelines outlined above. Applicants should have at least a high school diploma or equivalent and be prepared to perform manual tasks, use hand tools, and record work activities accurately.

Qualifications

• Requires high school diploma, GED equivalent or specialized vocational training.
• Must possess a valid state commercial driver’s license (CDL) with appropriate endorsements or obtain CDL permit (3 months after date of hire).
• Must obtain CDL (Class “B”) with appropriate endorsements (6 months after date of hire). 12 months for Class A/B within 12 months of hire.

Responsibilities

• Operates heavy equipment to construct, maintain and repair paved and unpaved county roads, curbs, gutters, sidewalks, driveways, ditches, catch basins and storm drainage systems.
• Operates heavy equipment to maintain public rights‑of‑way and assist other divisions and departments as necessary, including landfill tasks.
• Manually loads / unloads materials onto vehicles; transports equipment and materials to / from work sites.
• Uses hand and power tools in various manual tasks as required.
• Inspects equipment to ensure proper and safe working condition; reports defects or required maintenance to the supervisor.
• Performs routine maintenance and cleaning of assigned tools and equipment.
• Maintains accurate and complete work records as required.
• May operate dump trucks and other equipment.
