Our client is a leading company in waste-to-energy and environmental services is hiring a Commissioning Engineer – Instrumentation & Electrical to support the successful start-up and turnover of anaerobic digestion facilities across the U.S. This role plays a vital part in ensuring projects transition smoothly from construction into operational service, supporting system integration, electrical testing, and instrumentation verification.

This is a remote position with extensive travel (up to 70%) to construction and commissioning sites nationwide.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee commissioning activities from system energization to full operational handover, ensuring adherence to technical and safety standards.
  • Execute commissioning protocols including system verifications, instrumentation checks, and electrical system testing.
  • Collaborate with engineering, construction, and operations teams to ensure equipment and systems are installed and commissioned per design requirements.
  • Troubleshoot control system and instrumentation issues in real-time to support system readiness.
  • Monitor and report progress against commissioning schedules and milestones, escalating risks or delays where necessary.
  • Ensure a safe commissioning environment by adhering to and enforcing health and safety practices on site.
  • Provide technical input to pre-commissioning planning efforts and help refine startup procedures.
  • Review system drawings, manufacturer documentation, and process specifications to ensure accurate implementation.
  • Build strong working relationships with site teams, vendors, and contractors to foster collaborative commissioning execution.
  • Document and archive all commissioning test results, procedures, punch lists, and operational turnover packages.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of commissioning processes and tools across the organization.

Qualifications

  • 5–10 years of experience in commissioning, electrical systems, instrumentation, or plant operations.
  • Proven background in electrical commissioning, control systems integration, or process instrumentation.
  • Strong problem-solving mindset with the ability to work in dynamic, fast-paced field environments.
  • Excellent communication and coordination skills across multiple disciplines and stakeholder groups.
  • Comfortable reading and interpreting technical drawings, specifications, and wiring diagrams.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office; experience with commissioning software or reporting tools is a plus.
  • Ability and willingness to travel extensively (up to 70%) to support field operations across the U.S.
  • Flexible approach to work hours, especially during key commissioning milestones or outages.
  • Prior experience in anaerobic digestion, renewable fuels, or biogas systems is preferred but not required.
  • A strong understanding of field safety practices and relevant electrical standards.
