Job summary

AdventHealth South Overland Park seeks a qualified Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA) to provide specialized care across pre-, intra-, and post-operative phases. You will support surgeons as the first assistant, assess patients, and ensure safe, compassionate peri-operative care.

The role requires 2+ years in an OR, proficiency with instruments, and strong communication. A sign-on bonus is offered and a path for clinical ladder advancement is available.

Qualifications

• Two or more years of nursing experience in an OR unit.
• At least two years circulating and/or scrub experience in a multi-specialty surgical setting.
• Proficiency in acute care nursing and peri-operative nursing practice.
• Experience with computerized clinical documentation.
• Strong communication, collaboration, anticipation, and critical-thinking skills.
• Ability to communicate effectively with patients, families, nurses, physicians, surgeons, and other health care professionals.
• Strong physician and surgeon relationship skills with a team-focused approach.
• Knowledge of applicable regulatory, compliance, and accreditation standards.

Responsibilities

• The RNFA provides specialized nursing care during pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative phases.
• Serves as the first assistant during surgical procedures within education, training, and policy scope.
• Assists with pre-operative and post-operative patient assessments and communicates relevant findings.
• Prepares operating rooms with instruments, equipment, supplies based on surgeon preference cards.
• Performs surgical counts and reports discrepancies.
• Demonstrates knowledge of surgical procedures, instruments, supplies, equipment, and anticipated needs.
• Assists with updating surgeon preference cards as needed.
• Assumes unit responsibility when delegated by the nursing manager or director.
• Recognizes and responds to emergencies and abnormal findings appropriately.
• Maintains patient privacy, safety, dignity, and confidentiality.
