Job summary

Children's Hospital Colorado is seeking a Vascular Access Nurse to support vascular access for pediatric inpatients and outpatients. You will insert peripheral and ultrasound-guided IVs, manage devices, and coach staff on line care to prevent infections, improving outcomes for children.

The role emphasizes patient- and family-centered care, with a flex schedule and focus on quality and safety in vascular access. A BSN and RN license are required, with 2 years' nursing experience.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing required.
  • Two years of nursing experience with peripheral IV insertion.
  • RN license in good standing and BLS/CPR.
  • Bachelor's degree requirement may be substituted per policy.

Responsibilities

  • Place and maintain peripheral IVs, including ultrasound guidance when needed.
  • Track data and support process improvements to enhance care.
  • Train new nurses on IV placement and care.
  • Prepare and collect blood and other lab specimens.
  • Support PICC/vascular access teammates and prioritize patient needs.
  • Assists with procedures and sterile field setup.
  • Collaborate to select appropriate vascular access devices per care plan.
  • Educate patients and families about vascular access care.

The Vascular Access Nurse provides critical support for all vascular access needs of inpatient and outpatient populations by vascular access assessment, planning, placement, and care for patients as assigned. Utilizing your expert nursing skills, the Vascular Access Nurse will insert peripheral and ultrasound guided IVs, manage and monitor vascular access devices to prevent infections, and continuously improve staff competencies related to line care and maintenance. This position provides an opportunity to utilize your specialized vascular access knowledge to ensure the highest quality care for our pediatric patients.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Places and maintains peripheral IVs, including using ultrasound guidance for patients with difficult access.
  • Helps track data and supports process improvements to improve care.
  • May help train new nurses on IV placement and care.
  • Prepares and collects blood and other lab specimens.
  • Supports EMT-Vascular Access staff by helping prioritize patient care needs.
  • Assists the PICC RN with procedures and helps set up sterile fields.
  • Works with nurses, providers, and other team members to choose the right vascular access devices based on the patient’s care plan.
  • Teaches patients and families about vascular access care based on their needs.
  • Provides guidance and answers questions for staff about IV placement and care.
  • Checks on patients with central lines and changes dressings as needed.
  • Assesses IV site effectiveness and works with the care team to make updates to the treatment plan.

  • Two (2) years of nursing experience and proficient with peripheral IV insertion and care.
  • Equivalency
  • Applicants with an Associate's Degree in Nursing who agree to obtain a BSN within three (3) years from their start date may be considered in lieu of a Bachelor of Science (BSN) in Nursing.
  • Licenses & Certifications
  • BLS/CPR from the American Heart Association with at least 6 months left before expiration is required upon hire.
  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license.
