Job description

Position Overview

Children’s Wisconsin is a nationally recognized childhood health system. The Vascular Access Team provides peripheral intravenous (IV) therapy to pediatric patients requiring IV access, including long PIV and midline catheters. The role supports hospital-wide access needs and serves as a clinical resource for line management and education.

Responsibilities
  • Place IVs using vein viewing equipment, including ultrasound.
  • Assess and determine the most appropriate type and site of vascular access (PIV, Long PIV, Midline).
  • Act as a clinical resource to evaluate existing lines and provide recommendations to the care team.
  • Round on inpatient units to offer targeted education, infection surveillance, and data collection.
  • Design and deliver ongoing staff education on peripheral line care, aseptic technique, site and dressing care, and venous access skills.
  • Collaborate with physicians and other clinical staff to provide effective communication and education.
  • Participate in hospital‑wide committees, including the Peripheral Intravenous Infiltrates and Extravasates (PIVIE), Central Line Associated Blood Stream Infections (CLABSI), and Pressure Ulcer Prevention (PUP) teams.
  • Assist in developing, implementing, and evaluating operational policies, procedures, and programs related to vascular access.
  • Apply current research findings to practice and introduce new evidence into clinical care.
  • Participate in data collection regarding vascular access team activities, requests, and outcomes.
  • Maintain and improve knowledge related to vascular access techniques and practices.
Qualifications
  • Minimum 2+ years of experience with PIV placement.
  • Direct pediatric patient care experience in ER, acute care, or critical care preferred.
  • Previous experience with ultrasound‑guided line placement preferred.
  • Associate’s Degree from an accredited nursing school or Respiratory Therapy program required.
  • Valid Wisconsin RN license or Wisconsin Respiratory Care Practitioner license required.
  • BLS‑Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider certification required.
  • PALS‑Pediatric Advanced Life Support certification required within 180 days.
  • Ability to work independently with strong time‑management and prioritization skills.
  • Capacity to handle physical and mental stress in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for collaboration with peers, supervisors, and medical staff.
  • Ability to identify patients at risk for difficult IV access (DIVA) and apply pain‑reduction techniques.
