RN TEAM LEAD - Medical Step Down Unit (Open)

How You’ll Help Transform Healthcare: The RN Team Lead serves as a leader, clinical resource, role model, coach, and facilitator for staff and department operations. The role involves clinical nursing care for patients of all ages within the unit, assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient care, and leadership of the patient care team. The team lead works to achieve optimal patient outcomes, mobilizes the team toward positive outcomes, follows up on issues to ensure successful resolution, and supports the manager/director in ensuring staff competence and performance development.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Provide professional nursing care to patients of all ages.
  • Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care to achieve optimal outcomes.
  • Lead the work group, resolve routine issues, foster a positive and productive work environment, and support fiscally responsible operations.
  • Maintain awareness of organizational initiatives and incorporate applicable practices into the work unit.
  • Refer complex or sensitive issues (e.g., compensation, staffing, hiring, corrective action) to the manager/director.
  • Assist manager/director in ensuring staff competence and supporting staff performance development.
  • Identify areas for improvement and contribute to developmental plans for team members.
  • Provide regular coaching and feedback, maintain performance documentation, prepare performance assessments, and communicate team member performance to leadership.
  • Assist with or prepare work schedules, ensuring adequate coverage, equitable staffing, and control of work hours.
  • Manage routine clinical or operational issues and notify leadership as appropriate.
  • Collaborate with management on fiscal stewardship, including resource allocation, staffing decisions, budget input, and expense control.
  • Support departmental initiatives such as patient satisfaction improvement, performance improvement activities, and other quality initiatives.
  • Conduct individual and team meetings, ensuring effective two-way communication.
  • Keep staff informed, listen to concerns, resolve issues, follow up, and promote a positive work environment.
  • Encourage accountability, professionalism, and development of interpersonal and communication skills among staff.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable regulatory, licensure, and accreditation standards (e.g., The Joint Commission, CLIA, COLA, OSHA, AAAHC).
Requirements
  • Education: Associate degree or diploma in nursing from a State Board of Nursing–approved program.
  • Experience: Minimum of one year in the clinical discipline with demonstrated clinical and leadership expertise.
  • Licensure/Certification: Registered Nurse licensure in the Commonwealth of Virginia required. Electronic Fetal Monitoring certification (C‑EFM) may be required. AHA BLS‑HCP required; ACLS, PALS, and/or NRP may be required based on specific work unit.
  • Must demonstrate effective leadership, communication, teamwork, and interpersonal skills.
  • Must be able to prioritize, delegate, and coordinate care and operational workflows.
  • Requires ability to coach staff, participate in performance evaluations, and support operational and quality initiatives.
  • Must demonstrate professionalism, accountability, and the ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
