Job summary

Montana State Hospital is seeking a Registered Nurse (RN) to provide skilled nursing care to adult geriatric psychiatric clients. The role includes assessment, treatment planning, interventions, and evaluating outcomes, while maintaining a therapeutic environment.

The RN will assign work, train nursing staff, manage medications including psychopharmacology, document care, and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams. Flexible 12-hour night shifts offered.

Qualifications

• Active RN license in MT or compact licensure.

Job Summary:

The Registered Nurse (RN) at Montana State Hospital provides skilled nursing care and support to adult clients within a geriatric psychiatric setting. The role involves nursing assessment, treatment planning, interventions, and evaluation while maintaining a therapeutic environment. The RN will also assign work and provide direction and training to subordinate nursing personnel. This position requires strong communication, clinical expertise in psychiatric nursing, and the ability to work flexible shifts in a fast-paced, specialized environment.

Responsibilities:

• Perform comprehensive nursing assessments and develop individualized treatment plans.
• Administer medications and monitor patient responses, including psychopharmacology management.
• Maintain a safe and therapeutic environment for geriatric psychiatric patients.
• Provide patient education and support regarding treatment and medication.
• Assign work, direct, and train subordinate nursing staff and support personnel.
• Document patient care and clinical observations accurately and timely.
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to coordinate patient care.
• Utilize technology and patient care information systems proficiently.
• Apply de-escalation techniques and crisis intervention skills as needed.
• Adhere to patient rights and facility policies regarding medical treatment.

Required Skills & Certifications:

• Current Registered Nurse license in the State of Montana or compact licensure.
• Minimum of 2 years experience in geriatric psychiatric nursing.
• Graduate of an accredited nursing program with a degree in nursing.
• Knowledge of nursing, medications, treatment planning, and psychopharmacology.
• Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
• Proficiency in nursing instruments, equipment, and patient care technology.
• Ability to perform thorough patient assessments and documentation.
• Certification in CPI (Crisis Prevention Intervention) highly desired.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

Preferred Skills & Certifications:

• At least 1 year of travel nursing experience.
• Experience working in psychiatric inpatient treatment programs.
• CPI certification if not already obtained.
• Experience with geriatric psych nursing beyond the minimum requirement.

Special Considerations:

• Flexible scheduling with facility-determined shifts, including 7p-7a night shifts.
• Work environment focused on geriatric psychiatric care requiring strong de-escalation skills.
• Shift differential may be available.
• One meal provided per shift.
• Must be able to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.

Scheduling:

• 12-hour shifts, primarily 7:00 PM to 7:00 AM, with flexibility according to facility needs.
• Shift assignments are flexible and subject to facility scheduling requirements.
