Sentara Heart Hospital, located on the campus of Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in Norfolk, Virginia, is hiring a Registered Nurse - Supervisor for the Cardiac Operating Room (OR) Team!

Up to $15,000 sign-on bonus available for qualified candidates, and relocation assistance can be provided.

The Supervisor of Nursing and Patient Care Services in a hospital setting plays a key leadership role in the nursing department. They support the manager by overseeing all patient care activities on their assigned nursing unit(s). Responsibilities include ensuring high standards of care, coordinating daily nursing activities, facilitating communication among medical teams, training, mentoring, and evaluating clinical staff. They manage patient care assignments, resolve patient and family concerns, and ensure compliance with hospital policies, protocols, and safety regulations. Additionally, they assist with staffing decisions, maintain inventory for medical supplies, and ensure the unit is properly equipped to provide quality care.

This position is full-time with rotating shifts.

There is an on-call requirement and once-a-month weekend call. Candidates must live within 30 minutes of the hospital for call purposes.

Sentara Norfolk General Hospital is one of only five Level 1 trauma centers in Virginia, home to the Nightingale Regional Air Ambulance, the region’s first Magnet hospital, and nationally ranked heart program at Sentara Heart Hospital. The hospital is situated on the Eastern Virginia Medical Campus, serving as the primary teaching institution. Sentara Norfolk General and the Heart Hospital offer Transplant Services: Heart, Kidney, and Pancreas. We are a Certified Stroke Center and the only Level 3 Epilepsy Center in the area.

The Sentara Heart Hospital, a 112-bed facility, is ranked #2 for Cardiology services and Heart Surgery in Virginia and #24 nationally for best heart programs.

Cardiac Operating Room Department Overview:

Our department consists of five operating rooms, including one hybrid OR. We handle over 8 OR cases daily. Nurses work with a multidisciplinary team including Cardio-thoracic Surgeons, OR attendants, Surgical Techs, Surgical Assistants, Perfusionists, Anesthesiologists, Cardiovascular Technologists, and Physician Assistants.

The cardiovascular OR nurse works as part of the surgical services and OR teams to treat open-heart (cardiovascular) patients. Responsibilities include preparing the OR, ensuring equipment and medications are available, reviewing patient charts, assessing patients upon admission, preparing and positioning patients, administering medications, monitoring vital signs during procedures, documenting information, and providing post-surgical reports to ICU nurses. They also prepare the OR for the next case.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Nursing.
  • All direct care RNs are required to have BLS within 90 days of hire and ACLS within 1 year of hire.

Experience:

  • At least 1 year of nursing leadership experience.
  • At least 2 years of nursing experience within the unit or a similar unit.

Certification/Licensure:

  • Virginia RN License or Multi-State/Compact license.
  • All direct care RNs must have BLS within 90 days of hire.
