General Summary

Under the supervision of the Clinical Director, the Registered Nurse oversees patient care in the General Inpatient Hospice Unit and provides skilled nursing care to patients, families, and caregivers. The RN performs initial and comprehensive assessments, collaborates with the Interdisciplinary Team (IDT) to develop and implement the plan of care, and updates the plan as needed. The RN works closely with other IDT members to meet all patient and family needs and supervises LPNs, aides, and volunteers.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform initial and comprehensive nursing assessments.
• Develop and implement the hospice plan of care and reassess/adjust as needed.
• Collaborate with the IDT to meet patient and family needs.
• Supervise LPNs, aides, and volunteers.

Education and Certification

• Graduate of an accredited nursing program required.
• Bachelor’s degree in nursing preferred.
• Certified Hospice and Palliative Nurse (CHPN) certification preferred.

Experience

• Minimum of 2 years general nursing experience; hospice experience required.
• Experience with pain and symptom management interventions preferred.
• Ability to work in an interdisciplinary setting.
• Understanding of hospice philosophy and principles of death/dying.

Special Employment Requirements

• Valid Pennsylvania RN license required.
• Cleared by PA State Police criminal history check.
• Valid PA driver’s license and transportation during work hours.
• Regular attendance and ability to travel to patient homes if necessary.
• Professional, ethical behavior and patient confidentiality.
• Excellent verbal communication, empathy, problem‑solving, and stress management.
• Manual dexterity for writing, keyboarding, telephone use.
• Visual/hearing ability sufficient for written/verbal communication.

Physical Demands

• Medium work: exerting 25–50 lbs occasionally, 10–25 lbs frequently, up to 10 lbs constantly.
• Requires bending, reaching, stooping, lifting; ability to transport self throughout facility.
• Ability to travel to patient homes if necessary.

Health Hazards

• Occasional exposure to blood and body substances.
• Exposure to needle sticks possible.

Working Conditions

Works in a state‑of‑the‑art hospice inpatient unit; may work in varying conditions in patient homes where conditions may be less than desirable.
