Job summary

Hospice of North Alabama in Florence, AL seeks a dedicated On‑Call Registered Nurse to provide after-hours hospice care with compassionate, patient‑centered support. The RN will collaborate with the remote triage team, assess urgent symptoms, administer medications as ordered, and document care thoroughly.

The role emphasizes independence with team coordination, a strong focus on family guidance, and adherence to hospice protocols.

Qualifications

• Current nursing license in the state of operation.
• One year nursing experience required, 3+ years preferred.
• Experience in hospice or similar setting preferred.
• Knowledge of hospice philosophy of care.
• Commitment to clinical and documentation excellence.
• Must have a valid insured vehicle and safe driving record.

Responsibilities

• Provide hands-on 1:1 hospice care during after-hours on-call periods.
• Assess and manage urgent symptoms quickly and compassionately.
• Administer medications or adjust care per hospice protocols.
• Communicate with physicians about changes and obtain orders.
• Offer guidance to patient and family on current condition and next steps.
• Pronounce death when applicable and assist families as needed.

Coverage area: Lauderdale, Colbert, and Lawrence Counties

Schedule: Friday at 4pm thru Monday at 8am

As a On-Call RN You will:

• Collaborate with Remote Triage On Call Team to deliver hands-on care to hospice patients and offer supportive services to their families during after-hours, on an on-call basis


• Assess and manage urgent symptoms quickly and compassionately


• Administer medication or adjust care based on hospice protocols or provider orders


• Communicate with the physician regarding changes in condition and obtain orders as necessary


• Offer guidance and support to the patient and family in understanding the current condition and anticipating the next steps


• If a death occurs during on-call hours, the RN will go to the home or facility to pronounce death, provide support to the family, contact the funeral home, and notify the hospice team


• Complete timely documentation and communication

Qualifications

• Graduate of an accredited nursing school with current licensure to practice in state of operation


• One year nursing experience required , 3+ years preferred


• Experience in hospice or a similar setting preferred


• Knowledge of the hospice philosophy of care


• Commitment to clinical and documentation excellence


• Must be a licensed driver with an automobile that is insured in accordance with state/or organization requirements and is in good working order
