Job summary

Alaska Heart Institute in Anchorage seeks a Registered Nurse – Primary to MD to work under physician supervision in a cardiology setting.

You will prepare rooms, take histories and vitals, assist with EKGs and treadmill tests, and dispense medications as directed. Must hold Alaska RN license; CPR is required and ACLS is a plus. Excellent teamwork and patient education are essential.

Job Title: Registered Nurse – Primary to MD

Department: EP

General Summary of Duties: Registered nurse performs delegated clinical and administrative procedures under the supervision of a physician, consistent with the scope of practice for a registered nurse. Duties do not constitute the practice of medicine.

Responsibilities
  • Performs all duties with active and continuous supervision by a physician, without necessarily requiring physical presence of the supervising physician at the time and place that services are rendered.
  • Prepares exam and treatment rooms with necessary instruments; maintains exam rooms with necessary supplies and materials; ensures cleanliness.
  • Prepares patients for examination and treatment; takes patient histories and vital signs.
  • Assists with patient 12‑lead EKGs and treadmill tests; administers prescribed treatments in accordance with AHI standards; dispenses oral medication as directed.
  • Observes, records and reports patient’s condition and reaction to drugs and treatments to physicians.
  • Assists with scheduling of tests, treatments and patient procedures; provides patient education; ensures preferences are given to patients in emergency situations.
  • Maintains timely flow of patients.
  • Screens telephone calls for referral to physician; responds to and refers incoming telephone calls; instructs patients and families regarding medication and treatment instructions.
  • Assists with maintenance of patient charts, records and other information.
  • Compiles and condenses technical and statistical data for reports and records.
  • Attends clinical staff meetings.
  • Participates in in‑services, professional development and committees as requested.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality.
  • Completes other duties as assigned by supervision.
Performance Requirements
  • Knowledge of medical examination, diagnostic and treatment room procedures.
  • Knowledge of medical equipment and instruments used to administer patient care.
  • Knowledge of AHI policies and procedures, including common safety hazards and precautions.
  • Knowledge of basic cardiac rhythm recognition and basic pharmacology, including interactions and side effects.
  • Knowledge of computer systems, AHI programs and applications.
  • Skill in taking vital signs, EKGs, treadmill tests, and sample collection.
  • Skill in maintaining patient records and recording test results.
  • Skill in patient education regarding a variety of cardiology issues and medications.
  • Ability to maintain quality control standards.
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Ability to interpret, adapt and apply guidelines and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate clearly.
  • Demonstrates ability to multi‑task; perform tasks within time frames assigned.
  • Demonstrates schedule flexibility; adjust to shifting priorities; stay organized in a changing environment; stay focused during stressful or difficult situations; exhibit comfort with ambiguity.
Compensation and Benefits

Pay Range: $38‑45/hr to start (dependent upon experience and education).

Qualifications
  • Education: Must be a graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
