Job Description

The competent Nurse in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) practices independently and demonstrates awareness of all relevant aspects of patient care. This role involves providing both routine and complex nursing care, with a focus on the long-range goals of patient health. The nurse continues to develop skills in managing clinical nurse contingencies and makes appropriate assignments and delegation to other care providers. The PICU Nurse addresses complex psychological, emotional, cultural, and social needs of patients and their families while utilizing the nursing process that includes assessment, diagnosis, planning, intervention, and evaluation.

Responsibilities

• Provide nursing care utilizing the nursing process for assigned patients.
• Administer medications and treatments following appropriate protocols.
• Monitor patients for side effects and effectiveness of prescribed treatments.
• Document patient history, symptoms, medications, and care provided.
• Educate patients, families, and caregivers on health management and available resources.

Required Experience

• Minimum of 2 years of experience in a related nursing specialty is required.
• Pediatric ICU experience is preferred.

Certifications/Licensure

• Current BLS certification required (AHA only).
• Current ACLS certification required (AHA only).
• Current PALS certification required (AHA only).
• Registered Nurse License in the state of Texas or compact.
