Job summary

Oregon Health & Science University is seeking an experienced Registered Nurse to join the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit in Portland, OR. This Regular Full-Time role (0.90 FTE) involves 12-hour night shifts (1900-0730) with a variable schedule, including every other weekend as needed.

The PICU team delivers state-of-the-art care to infants to adolescents, working in a high-acuity environment with ECMO, CRRT, dialysis, and complex postoperative support. A comprehensive benefits package is included.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 1 year PICU RN experience or 2 years Peds acute care RN experience.
  • Current Oregon State RN license.
  • BLS and PALS from AHA required; orientation will occur.

Responsibilities

  • Provide care in PICU including ECMO collaboration with perfusion services.
  • Support CRRT and hemodialysis as needed within the unit.
  • Peritoneal dialysis support and high frequency ventilation for unstable patients.
  • Manage operative procedures in-unit for unstable patients and post-op care as needed.

  • Posting Salary Range: $55.24 - $92.02 per hour with offer based on experience, education and internal equity

  • Posting Schedule: Variable schedule, Mon-Sun, 12 hour shifts, every other weekend as needed.

Department Overview

The PICU at OHSU's Doernbecher Children's Hospital is a regional referral center for all critically ill and injured children that operates 24/7. The primary purpose of the PICU is to provide optimal state of the art critical care nursing to any infant, child or adolescent who presents with a serious injury and/or illness. Care is provided for patients from birth to 18 years of age. Older patients are cared for on a case-case basis.

Function/Duties of Position

The PICU team cares for children across a vast spectrum of health issues including trauma, surgery, respiratory, cardiac, hematology/oncology and neurologic disorders.

  • Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO): this service is provided in collaboration with pediatric perfusion services. Staff that provide these interventions (ECMO specialists) are selected, educated and competency validated by Pediatric Perfusion.
  • CRRT-continuous renal replacement therapy
  • Hemodialysis (provided by dialysis services)
  • Peritoneal dialysis
  • High Frequency ventilation
  • Operative procedures in the unit for patients too unstable to move to the OR, recovery of postoperative cardiac, neurosurgical, general surgery patients who are hemodynamically unstable or who continue to require post-operative ventilator assistance
Department Specific Working Conditions

May be required to provide continuing care and monitoring of patients in locations outside of PICU including MRI, CT, Nuclear Med, Ultrasound, and Radiology.

Required Qualifications
  • Minimum of 1 year PICU RN experience or 2 years Peds acute care RN experience
  • Pediatric CCRN certificationBSN Graduates: Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing from a program accredited by Commission of Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation (CNEA) 30 days before start date.
  • ADN Graduates: Associate Degree in Nursing from an accredited program 30 days before the start date.
  • Associate degree Nurses required to enroll in BSN program within 3 years of hire and complete within 5 years of hire
  • Annual Department specific education requirements include:
  • 6 hours of Trauma Education
  • Annual pediatric competencies
  • Annual occupational health compliance requirements
  • Annual Point-of-Care Competencies: Capillary Blood Glucose, Urine Ketone Testing
  • MRI Safety Competency
  • Current, unencumbered Oregon State Registered Nurse License
  • BLS and PALS from AHA required. New hires will be enrolled and required to complete during orientation
  • Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodation

  • Pediatric CCRN certification
Additional Details

Experienced Nurse Orientation (Fellowship or Specialty Fellowship) with >1 year of experience:

  • Either Transition to Practice (TTP) Program Learning Pathway or Orientation experience individualized to the candidate between 2-14 weeks.
