Wayne Health in Detroit, MI is seeking a Registered Nurse (RN) to provide professional telephone and face-to-face nursing care following established Departmental policies and procedures.

The RN will manage vital signs, patient education, documentation in the electronic medical record, and coordination of tests and treatments, while ensuring patient safety and high-quality care in ambulatory settings.

Qualifications

  • Associate Degree in Nursing from an accredited program.
  • BSN preferred but not required.
  • Current Michigan RN License and valid BLS certification.
  • 1–2 years’ ambulatory care experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of nursing theory, OSHA/MIOSHA regulations, and HIPAA.

Responsibilities

  • Take and document vital signs; alert physicians to abnormalities.
  • Instruct patients in specimen collection and tests.
  • Prepare patients for examinations and coordinate treatment.
  • Assist physicians with procedures and surgeries.
  • Perform venipuncture, IV therapy, injections as ordered.
  • Document medications and care in the medical record.
  • Schedule tests, x-rays, and referrals; manage follow-ups.
  • Check results, notify physicians of abnormalities.
  • Call in prescriptions and educate patients on care.
  • Maintain stocked clinical areas and equipment.

Job Summary:

The Registered Nurse (RN) provides professional telephone and face-to-face nursing care to patients following established Departmental policies and procedures.

Job Description:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform and document in the electronic medical record patients’ vital signs (temperature, pulse, blood pressure and respirations) height, weight, allergies; alert physicians of any abnormalities in vital signs or appearance

  • Instruct and/or assist patients in specimen collection, tests and procedures

  • Prepare patients for physical examinations

  • Assist Physicians with or coordinate patient treatment, procedures and surgeries

  • Perform venipunctures, IV therapies and injections according to Physicians’ orders or patient emergencies

  • Dispense medications as prescribed by physicians; document medication orders in medevant or electronic medical record

  • Document in the medical record complete and accurate summaries of care given, including procedures performed and observations made

  • Schedule/coordinate testing, treatments, x-rays, consultations with/referrals to health care providers, inpatient admissions

  • Review laboratory/test results; recognize abnormal laboratory/test results and notify physicians

  • Contact patients with test/procedure results

  • Review Physicians’ discharge instructions and follow-up appointments with patients

  • Call in prescriptions/refills to pharmacies for patients as directed by Physicians

  • Educate and counsel patients and family members on health conditions, desired results of treatment plans, expectations during illness and recovery and other related areas

  • Check diagnostic laboratory forms and Physicians’ orders on patient’s record for accuracy and completeness

  • Maintain clinical areas to ensure the necessary medical equipment, supplies and pharmaceuticals are stocked and available

  • Answer telephones, direct/triage patient calls, take messages, relay messages/information to the appropriate personnel; contact patients regarding test results and recommended follow-up

  • Establish and maintain productive working relationships with people inside and outside the department and/or practice

Education, Licensure/Certification, and Training:

  • Associate Degree in Nursing

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing preferred

  • Current Michigan Registered Nurse License

  • Current BLS Certification

  • 1-2 years’ experience in an ambulatory care setting preferred

  • Knowledge of nursing theory and practice to give and evaluate patient care

  • Knowledge of OSHA, MIOSHA, JACHO and HIPPA regulations

  • Knowledge of Public Health Code and Michigan Nurse Practice Act preferred

Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of nursing theory and practice to give and evaluate patient care

  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding patients, personnel and/or financial data

  • Excellent organizational skills to work independently, prioritize, handle multiple tasks and manage time

Safety Requirements:

  • Compliance with Department Health and Safety policies and procedures

Working Conditions/Schedule:

  • 40-hour work week, hours and days to be determined by the business needs of the department. Additional hours may be required
