Summary

The Registered Nurse provides direct care to patients using the nursing process, including ongoing assessment, interventions, and evaluation of treatment effectiveness. The RN leads the team, delegates tasks, collaborates with the interdisciplinary team, and ensures patient care meets all regulatory and institutional standards.

Responsibilities
  • 40%: Assess patient needs and provide skilled nursing services as prescribed by the physician authorized plan of care and accepted standards of evidence‑based nursing practice.
  • 30%: Provide direct patient care, including medication administration, treatments, education, call lights, assisting with transfers, responding to alarms, and other duties as appropriate.
  • 20%: Evaluate effectiveness of the treatment plan and suggest or participate in updating/revising the plan in collaboration with team members.
  • 10%: Ensure compliance with local, state, federal regulations, guidelines, and hospital policies related to patient care.

  • Assemble group or individual patient care plans and present rationale to the team.
  • Understand and apply clinical pathways appropriately.
  • Maintain a professional demeanor in all situations.
  • Document accurately and concisely; include pertinent clinical data.
  • Share information and report significant changes or abnormal findings in a timely manner.
  • Participate in regulatory surveys and performance improvement activities.
  • Assist with orientation and ongoing competency training.
  • Provide a safe and secure environment for patient care.
  • Maintain knowledge of current trends and professional standards within the specialty.
  • Understand role in emergency preparedness procedures.
  • Set up and assist with central line and chest tube insertion and care per policy and procedure.
  • Insert canal, nasogastric, and feeding tubes per physician order, following proper procedure.
  • Insert and care for IVs.
  • Provide routine care and instruction for suprapubic catheters and surgical drains per physician order.
  • Provide proper care for drains and their removal.
  • Remove sutures and skin clips, provide routine ostomy care, irrigate and pack wounds per physician order and care plan.
  • Set up, instruct, and monitor the use of PCA pumps.
  • Obtain Doppler pulses following proper procedure.
  • Provide routine care of gastrostomy/jejunostomy tubes per procedure and physician orders.
  • Assist with heparin therapy protocol.
  • Apply basic traction, splints, braces, and CPM machines per procedure and physician order.
  • Trim casts, remove wound drains per physician order and procedure.
  • Maintain total hip and total knee precaution measures and instruct patients.

  • Credential: RN: Registered Nurse (Essential: true)
  • Credential: BLS: Basic Life Support (Essential: true, Within 1 month of hire or transfer)
  • Credential: DIMC: Dysrhythmia Interpretation Management (Essential: true, Within 12 months of hire)
  • Credential: PALS: Pediatric Advanced Life Support (Essential: true, Within 12 months of hire or transfer)
  • Credential: TEAM Advanced: Techniques for Effective Aggression Management (Essential: true, Within 6 months of hire or transfer; employees hired on/before 12/31/2023 have 24 months)
Education

Associated Degree in Nursing (BSN preferred). Education Specialization: Essential: true.

Other Information
  • Specialty certification preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to communicate with individuals and groups at all levels.
  • Knowledge, ability, and competence in treating unit‑specific patient populations.
  • Must complete MyMichigan Health blood‑borne pathogen and TB testing as required.
  • Competency in Microsoft Windows; further learning opportunities may be required.
Physical/Mental Requirements
  • Exposure to stressful situations, public contact, trauma, grief, and death.
  • Ability to wear PPE that contains latex or suitable substitutes.
  • Mobility: move freely throughout facility with or without assistance; perform job functions as described.
  • Vision, hearing, and dexterity may be required with or without assistive devices.
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk for long periods; may need frequent postural changes (stooping, kneeling, crouching).
  • Some exposure to blood‑borne pathogens; follow testing requirements.
  • Handle multiple tasks, work independently; maintain regular attendance and alertness.
  • Physical demands: occasionally lift/carry 21–50 lbs, frequently 20 lbs, and constantly 10 lbs or less.
