Job summary

Covenant HealthCare in Saginaw, MI is seeking an experienced Operating Room Registered Nurse to lead patient care before, during, and after operative procedures. The OR RN develops care plans, coordinates teams, and ensures safety and quality throughout the surgical experience.

Responsibilities include prioritizing care, administering therapies, documenting data, and acting as a mentor for staff while adhering to Covenant HealthCare standards and continuous improvement practices.

Qualifications

  • Nursing degree and RN licensure required.
  • BLS certification required.

Job description

Overview

The Operating Room Registered Nurse uses the nursing process, develops a plan of nursing care and then coordinates and delivers care to patients undergoing operative procedures. Operating nurses have the requisite skills and knowledge to assess, diagnose, plan, intervene, and evaluate the outcomes of interventions. The Operating RN addresses the physiological, psychological, sociocultural, and spiritual responses of surgical patients. The RN is concerned with the patient's safety as well as physiological and behavioral responses throughout the surgical experience. The RN is responsible for determining the education and competency level of assistive personnel to whom they are delegating. This individual works under the supervision of the Manager/Coordinator. The RN must possess excellent computer and organizational skills. The RN is responsible and accountable for assisting the patient to move as rapidly, uneventfully, safely, and effectively as possible through their procedure. Must be able to assess, care for all age groups. The RN performs other duties as assigned. The OR RN demonstrates excellent customer service performance in their attitude and actions are at all times consistent with the standards contained in the Vision, Mission and Values of Covenant HealthCare and the commitment to Extraordinary Care for Every Generation.

Responsibilities

  • Knowledge of nursing processes and experience in health care environment.
  • Administers and evaluates pharmacological and other therapeutic treatment regimens.
  • Responds to emergency situations to promote optimal patient outcomes by recognizing changes in the patient's health status.
  • Demonstrates awareness and sensitivity to patient as identified within the organization.
  • Functions with an awareness and application of safety as identified within the organization.
  • Demonstrates awareness of legal issues in all aspects of patient care, unit function and strives to manage situation in a reduced-risk manner.
  • Uses principles of aseptic practice in varying situations.
  • Follows established policies and procedures for counts.
  • Operates mechanical, electrical, and air-powered equipment according to manufacturer's instructions.
  • Documents patient data to ensure continuity in the provision and coordination of patient care.
  • Effectively communicates patient care needs/expectations/priorities with team members.
  • Acts as resource/educator for team members.
  • Collaborates effectively with all health care disciplines to facilitate patient outcomes.
  • Initiates corrective action when breaks in sterile technique occur.
  • Documents on all hospital and department records as required.
  • Serves as mentor for other nurses.
  • Performs departmental projects as required.
  • Attends and participates in unit meetings.
  • Adhere to unit/department policies, procedures, and unit structure standards.
  • Functions as a responsible team member.
  • Maintains confidentiality in relation to patients, families, and the organization.
  • Appropriately represents Covenant HealthCare by promoting a positive image to the departments, medical staff, leadership and outside constituents.
  • Maintains professional standards by actively participating in continuing education activities, patient outcome activities, and in-services related to area of practice and age(s) of patient population
  • Demonstrates excellent customer service in attitude and actions at all times consistent with the Code of Conduct.
  • Contributes to organization success targets for patient satisfaction and net operating margin

Qualifications
  • Nursing Degree (ADN, Diploma, BSN) from an accredited school of nursing.
  • License to practice professional nursing (RN) in the State of Michigan.
  • BLS Required
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
  • One year of RN experience required. Previous acute care and unit specific experience preferred.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
  • Demonstrates appropriate care for the following age groups: Neonatal/Newborn, Infant, Pediatric, Adolescent, Adult and Geriatric.
  • Demonstrates principles of aseptic practice in varying situations.
  • Operates mechanical, electrical, and air-powered equipment according to manufacturer's instructions.

  • Demonstrates interpersonal skills in dealing with patients, families, and co-workers.
  • Demonstrates an awareness of and assumes self-responsibility for working within the scope of the Registered Nurse role.

  • Demonstrates the ability to problem-solve and prioritize unit needs independently, efficiently, and effectively.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • Ability to maintain punctual attendance consistent with ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state, and local standards.
  • Frequent lifting up to 25 lbs.
  • Frequent standing, walking, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, reaching, handling, talking, hearing, near vision, midrange vision, visual accommodation, and color vision
  • Occasional lifting up to 100 lbs. or more
  • Occasional sitting, kneeling, crouching, squatting, crawling, twisting, feeling, tasting, smelling, far vision, depth perception, and field of vision
