Job summary

Covenant HealthCare in Michigan is seeking an Oncology Registered Nurse to monitor patients receiving chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy, and other cancer treatments. You will assess, coordinate the plan of care, educate patients and families, and support safety throughout the continuum of care.

You will work with physicians and the interdisciplinary team to ensure high-quality care, maintain HIPAA compliance, and contribute to Extraordinary Care for Every Generation.

Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree in nursing from an accredited school.
  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in Michigan.
  • BLS certification required.
  • Chemotherapy/biotherapy certificate and Certified Oncology Nurse required or within 3 months.
  • Experience in acute care nursing or cancer care preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Triage patients and respond to calls, directing to the appropriate staff.
  • Assess vitals, plan care, and monitor physiologic and cognitive status.
  • Assist with oncology procedures and administer medications per orders.
  • Record patient information accurately and maintain EMR data.
  • Provide education on medications, treatments, and follow-up care.
  • Collaborate with physicians and inter-disciplinary team to develop protocols.

Overview

The Oncology Registered Nurse monitors patients diagnosed with cancer who are receiving chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy, and other cancer treatments through assessment, collaboration and coordination regarding plan of care, patient and family education, pain management, and patient safety throughout the continuum of care.

Responsibilities
Patient Assessment
  • Triages patients, answers patient phone calls and provides appropriate information and/or directs calls to appropriate provider/staff members.
  • Obtains reason for patient visit, takes appropriate vital signs and treats patient in an ongoing and systematic manner, focusing on the patient's physiologic, psychologic, and cognitive status.
  • Assists provider with procedures during exams, including preparation for biopsies, imaging, and other oncology-related interventions, and treatments.
  • Perform basic diagnostic tests as directed by provider and completes controls as required by regulatory agencies.
  • Manage wound care and dressings.
  • Properly administers medications and injections as prescribed. Provides patient information regarding drug interactions. Follows regulations regarding narcotic storage and maintains medical inventory log.
  • Accurately recording patient information, assessments, care plans.
Chronic Disease Management & Education
  • Assist patients in appropriate self-care techniques, providing pamphlets and instructions.
  • Addresses patient questions and concerns following clinical protocols.
  • Monitor patient conditions and report changes to the physician.
  • Provide patient education on medications, treatments, and follow-up care.
  • Identifies patient learning needs and their ability to follow through, including discharge instructions, while implementing appropriate measures to meet these needs.
Cross Departmental
  • Work with Practice Manager in developing clinical protocols for practice.
  • Assists Practice Manager with staff training and orientation.
  • Work independently or in collaboration with physicians and other interdisciplinary team members.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patient information according to established practice policies and government regulations, such as HIPAA.
  • Maintains professional competency through ongoing training and continuing education.
  • Participates in staff meetings, in-service programs and continuing education activities as necessary.
  • Performs other duties as assigned and/or vary based on medical specialty.
Qualifications
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
  • Associate’s degree in nursing from an accredited school.
  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan.
  • BLS certification required.
  • Chemotherapy/biotherapy certificate and Certified Oncology Nurse required or able to obtain within three (3) months of hire or internal transfer.
  • Experience in acute care nursing, cancer care and/or hematological conditions preferred.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
  • Knowledge of medication side effects and how to effectively communicate to patients.
  • Knowledge in the specialty of the practice for position.
  • Knowledge of proper “release of information” standards.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Computer literate and must be able to work with an EMR system while providing patient care.
  • Ability to remain calm in stressful/difficult situations.
  • Ability to maintain confidential information.
  • Ability to properly administer medications, including proper dosage, proper site and proper schedule.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • Ability to maintain punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state, and local standards.
  • Constant handling, feeling, talking, hearing and near vision.
  • Frequent lifting up to 25 lbs.
  • Frequent standing, walking, twisting, reaching, midrange vision, depth perception, color vision and field of vision.
  • Occasional lifting up to 100 or more lbs.
  • Occasional sitting, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, kneeling, crouching, squatting, tasting/smelling and far vision.
