Description:The unit consists of 54 beds, including semi-private rooms.Nurse-patient ratios during day shifts are 1:4-5 and 1:5-6 at night.Common diagnoses include stroke, spine surgery, seizure, brain tumor, head injury, and other neuroscience-related conditions.Nurses are required to titrate drips, specifically heparin titrated based on PTT; experience with heparin gtt is essential.A charge nurse is present 24/7 and does not take an assignment unless short-staffed, in which case nurses would exceed normal ratios.A house supervisor is also available 24/7.Patient care techs are available, with day ratios of 1:9-10 and evening ratios of 1:9-10.Night shift ratios are 1:10-12 for patient care techs.Nurses may encounter respiratory equipment such as high flow, but this is rare.Telemetry is managed house-wide, and nurses are not required to read strips from Phillips monitors.Shifts are organized as 12-hour shifts with a weekend requirement of every other weekend for both Saturday and Sunday.Holidays are scheduled on an every-other basis.Floating is expected in rotation with the rest of the staff, and travelers will float to general units as needed.Nurses are required to possess competencies for skills they are assigned when floated to other units.There is no specific dress code for scrubs, but tattoos must be covered while on duty, and piercings are limited to ears only.Unit orientation includes two days with an educator and preceptor while caring for patients.
