Job description

Job Summary: The Registered Nurse in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) provides specialized nursing care to critically ill neonates, including those born at 23-24 weeks gestation. This role involves managing advanced respiratory support, administering blood products, and supporting neonatal surgeries and high-risk deliveries. The nurse collaborates closely with the interdisciplinary team to deliver comprehensive care and may occasionally float to Pediatrics or Special Care Nurseries. A minimum of 3 years NICU experience is required, with flexibility to work across multiple campuses and willingness to work block schedules.

Responsibilities:
  • Provide skilled nursing care to neonates in a Level III or IV NICU, including infants born at 23-24 weeks gestation.
  • Manage respiratory support including CPAP/BiPAP, High Frequency Ventilators, Oscillators, and conventional ventilators.
  • Administer blood and blood products safely and accurately.
  • Perform cardioversion and defibrillation as needed.
  • Utilize cooling and warming blankets for temperature regulation.
  • Manage feeding tubes, PICC lines, central lines, and syringe pumps.
  • Attend and assist in high-risk deliveries and neonatal surgeries.
  • Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to develop and implement individualized care plans.
  • Occasionally float to Pediatrics, Special Care Nurseries, or Newborn Nurseries, primarily caring for infants.
  • Maintain documentation and communicate patient status effectively.
Required Skills & Certifications:
  • Active Registered Nurse license with at least 3 years NICU experience.
  • Experience with Level III or IV NICU patient care.
  • Proficiency in advanced neonatal respiratory support and critical care interventions.
  • Ability to administer blood products and perform emergency procedures such as cardioversion/defibrillation.
  • Strong communication and interdisciplinary collaboration skills.
  • Flexibility to float to different campuses and units as needed.
Preferred Skills & Certifications:
  • Experience working in multiple hospital campuses or units.
  • Familiarity with block scheduling and ability to work multiple consecutive shifts.
  • Prior experience with neonatal surgeries and high-risk delivery support.
Special Considerations:

Travel nurses must have been separated from any Providence-affiliated facility for at least 3 months prior to assignment. Active compact nursing license is honored across Swedish facilities. Floating is rare but may occur, primarily to Pediatrics or Special Care Nurseries with infant patients only. Work environment includes a high acuity NICU with approximately 77 beds and an average census of 50.

Scheduling:

Block scheduling is approved and preferred, with options to work 3 or more consecutive shifts. Shift assignments may vary based on unit needs and floating requirements.
