Job Summary:

The Registered Nurse in Labor and Delivery provides expert nursing care to maternal and newborn patients, managing labor progression, medical emergencies, and newborn assessments. The role involves collaboration with interdisciplinary teams, patient education, and cross-training to support Med Surg/EICU care as needed. The nurse ensures accurate medication administration, fetal monitoring, and neonatal resuscitation within scope of practice and certification, maintaining exceptional attention to detail.

Responsibilities:

• Complete initial nursing histories and assess patient conditions to develop individualized care plans.
• Triages patient care based on symptoms and manages labor progression including induction and cervical ripening.
• Administers medications accurately and monitors for adverse reactions.
• Manage obstetric emergencies such as prolapsed cord, breech delivery, postpartum hemorrhage, precipitous delivery, uterine rupture, meconium, abruptio placenta, and placenta previa.
• Perform and interpret fetal heart monitoring accurately.
• Manage pregnancy-related conditions including hypertension and diabetes.
• Assess newborn condition, recognize need for heightened surveillance or higher level care, and perform neonatal resuscitation.
• Identify and manage neonatal complications such as sepsis, hypoglycemia, hypothermia, and jaundice.
• Promote patient education and involve patients in newborn care.
• Communicate promptly and effectively with the patient care team about status changes.
• Cross-train and provide care for Med Surg/EICU patients as needed.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Skills & Certifications:

• Wisconsin Registered Nursing license.
• Two-year degree in nursing required; four-year degree preferred.
• AHA Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 1 month of hire.
• Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification within 6 months of hire.
• STABLE certification within 1 year of hire.
• Intermediate Fetal Monitoring certification within 1 year of hire.
• Exceptional accuracy and attention to detail.

Preferred Skills & Certifications:

• Experience in Med Surg and EICU nursing care.
• Strong interdisciplinary communication and collaboration skills.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Special Considerations:

• Night shift position in Labor and Delivery unit.
• May be required to cross-train and provide care in Med Surg and EICU units.
• Must be prepared to manage obstetric and neonatal emergencies promptly.

Scheduling:

• Primarily night shifts; exact schedule determined by unit staffing needs.
• Shift assignments may include flexibility to cover Med Surg/EICU as needed.
