Job summary

Fairview Health Services seeks an Endoscopy RN to provide comprehensive nursing care for GI and pulmonary procedures at the Minneapolis area facility. The role includes pre-procedure assessment, intra- and post-procedure support, and ensuring equipment readiness within a fast-paced perioperative setting.

The candidate will collaborate with MDs, RNs, APPs, schedulers, and inpatient staff, and will participate in sedation support, discharge education, and specimen handling per policy.

Qualifications

  • Current MN RN License
  • 1+ year RN experience in acute care setting
  • BLS
  • ACLS (if not currently certified, unit will arrange certification class)

Responsibilities

  • Performs advanced monitoring and intervenes as needed; identifies and responds to potential and emergent situations.
  • Collaborates with Attending MD to ensure pre-case planning and equipment readiness.
  • Responsible for pre-procedure patient assessment and carrying out physician orders.
  • Ensures proper functioning of equipment and supplies for GI and Pulmonary procedures.
  • Participates in intra- and post-procedure care including assisting anesthesia in airway management.
  • Assesses, plans, and teaches patient and family about procedure and discharge planning.
  • Handles specimens per policy and labels for lab.
  • Performs bedside cleaning of endoscopes and equipment; completes training for cleaning and sedation competency.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in EPIC, Provation MD, and Pyxis.

Job description

Job Overview

The Endoscopy RN is responsible for the assessment, planning, delivery, and evaluation of nursing care for all assigned patients undergoing GI procedures or pulmonary studies at the University of Minnesota Medical Center East Bank. These procedures are conducted in a variety of locations within the perioperative setting and may be performed with or without sedation/anesthesia. The RN role includes patient procedural prep and intra-procedure support as well as maintenance of this specific service line’s clinical operations (ex: room turnover, supply and equipment checks). The RN utilizes knowledge of physiological status and developmental stages to provide the patient and family with procedure-related education and support and includes the family in the care of the patient.

The Endoscopy RN collaborates with MDs, RNs, Advanced Practice Providers, schedulers, and inpatient staff to coordinate the care of the patient in a fast-paced environment. The RN utilizes knowledge of physiological status and developmental stages to provide the patient and family with procedure-related education and support and includes the family in the care of the patient. The RN delegates responsibilities to others as appropriate. The RN performs these responsibilities in accordance with all policy, procedure, and professional practice guidelines.

This position works a .7 FTE (56 hours per 2 week pay period) on the day shifts (start times at 630am,730am and 8am), 8 hour shifts. There is a rotating weekend call above FTE. Weekend call, Saturday and Sunday (7am-7pm) and Saturday and Sunday (9am-3pm), approximately every 5 weeks, and holidays.

The Endoscopy RN:

  • Performs advanced monitoring; intervenes as needed; promptly identifies and responds to potential and emergent situations; troubleshoots issues.
  • Collaborates with Attending MD to ensure thorough pre-case planning is completed and all anticipated equipment and supplies are in place and/or readily available prior to the start of the procedure.
  • Is responsible for pre-procedure patient assessment and carrying out physician orders for all phases of care.
  • Is responsible for the correct functioning of equipment and supplies for GI and Pulmonary procedures.
  • Participates inthe intra and post procedure care of the patient including supporting anesthesia care provider in airway management and altered states of anesthesia.
  • Is responsible to assess, plan and teach patient and family about procedure and provides appropriate discharge education and planning.
  • Is responsible for the proper handling of specimens from patient procedures, properly identifying, preparing and labeling specimens for the lab per thehospital's specimen management policy.
  • Is responsible to perform and assure proper cleaning of endoscopes and other procedural equipment and demonstrate the ability to complete bedside cleaning.
  • Is responsible to complete initial and annual training for bedside equipment cleaning and Sedation competency.
  • Will beable to demonstrate proficiency in the equipment or software used for patient care, includingEPIC, Provation MD, and Pyxis.
Required Qualifications:

Preferred Qualifications:
  • 1+ year RN experience in endoscopy procedures
