This primarily administrative role serves as a liaison among patients, providers, clinical staff and surgical facilities to ensure correct preparation and scheduling. Responsibilities include coordinating procedures, reviewing records, providing preoperative education, identifying barriers, and guiding patients through testing, authorizations and follow-up.

Qualifications

• Registered nurse with MI licensure at hire.
• Current BLS certification (AHA) required.
• ACLS certification within 90 days.
• PALS certification within 180 days.
• Experience coordinating surgical scheduling or care coordination is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate and schedule surgical procedures based on provider orders and facility availability.
• Review patient records for completeness before scheduling.
• Communicate with patients about surgery dates, preoperative requirements, testing, and instructions.
• Provide RN-level clinical review and patient education for surgical preparation.
• Coordinate preoperative testing, medical clearances, referrals, and documentation.
• Identify barriers to surgery and communicate concerns to the provider.
• Collaborate with physicians, APPs, nurses, schedulers, OR staff, and other departments.
• Maintain accurate EMR documentation.
• Facilitate changes in surgery dates or plans and assist with scheduling conflicts.
• Support prior-authorization and insurance workflows as applicable.

Job Summary

The RN Surgical Scheduling & Care Coordinator provides nursing support for patients preparing for surgical procedures. This position is primarily administrative and coordination-focused and serves as a key liaison between patients, providers, clinical staff, surgical facilities and other departments to ensure patients are appropriately prepared and scheduled for surgery

The RN Coordinates surgical scheduling, reviews clinical information and documentation for completeness, provides preoperative education and instructions, identifies barriers that may delay surgery, and facilitates communication and follow up throughout the surgical scheduling process.

Essential Functions

• Coordinate and schedule surgical procedures based on provider orders, patient needs, and surgical facility availability.


• Review surgical requests and patient records for completeness and accuracy before scheduling.


• Communicate with patients regarding surgery dates, preoperative requirements, testing, instructions, and next steps.


• Provide RN-level clinical review and patient education related to surgical preparation.


• Coordinate required preoperative testing, medical clearances, referrals, and other documentation.


• Identify missing information or potential barriers to surgery and communicate concerns to the provider or appropriate clinical team.


• Collaborate closely with physicians, APPs, medical assistants, surgery schedulers, OR staff, and other departments.


• Maintain accurate documentation in the electronic medical record.


• Facilitate communication when surgery dates, locations, or plans change.


• Support efficient use of provider surgical block time and assist with resolving scheduling conflicts.


• Respond to patient questions and route clinical concerns appropriately.


• Assist with prior-authorization and insurance-related workflows as applicable.


• Perform other RN care-coordination responsibilities related to the surgical patient journey.

• CRT-Basic Life Support (BLS) - AHA American Heart Association 90 Days Or

• CRT-Adv Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) - AHA American Heart Association WITHIN 90 DAYS Cardiovascular Advanced Heart Failure Ambulatory, Big Rapids Cardiac/Pulmonary Rehab, Big Rapids Pre-Op Call, United Cardiac Rehab, Radiology, Interventional Radiology, Pediatric Cardiology - Lansing 90 Days


• CRT-Pediatric Adv Life Support (PALS) - AHA American Heart Association Lake Drive Ambulatory Surgery Center, South Pavilion Ambulatory Surgery Center, pre/post/PACU nurses only, Pediatric Cardiology - Lansing 180 Days

Preferred

• Bachelor’s Degree Spectrum Health Continuing Care and Spectrum Health Medical Group do not require a Bachelors of Science in Nursing
