OverviewPerforms a variety of clinical duties; responsible for assisting the physician with direct and indirect patient care for kids 0-18 years of age in a Pediatric behavioral clinic. Prepares the patient for examination, treatment, diagnostic and laboratory duties, patient education, and minor surgical procedures. Performs other tasks as required, both administrative and clinical.

ResponsibilitiesClinical Excellence/Patient Care
- Manage and coordinate ongoing professional consultative relationships with referring PCP providers, therapists, schools, and other legal and community resources.
- Possess strong communication skills in person and by phone.
- Provide thorough education on psychotropic medication uses, indications, risks, benefits, and adverse effects.
- Provide phone triage, coordinating communication between patient caregivers and providers, maintaining accurate documentation, and communicating appropriate follow-up recommendations.
- Coordinate with insurance companies for prior authorizations for medications or procedures.
- Answer questions and provide education regarding health maintenance and medical illnesses to patients and families, as appropriate to scope and licensure.
- Document information in the patient's electronic chart, complete patient forms, and request medical records or correspondence to be scanned into the EHR.
- Schedule referrals to specialists or outpatient services as requested by the provider, and complete necessary forms or requisitions.
- Assist providers with examinations, procedures, and emergencies.
- Provide and document advice for home care, conducting follow-up calls regarding patient health and progress.
- Perform diagnostic tests and laboratory procedures.
- Assist with patient examinations, specimen collection, minor surgical procedures, and medication administration under provider supervision, as appropriate.
- Prioritize patient and workplace safety by preventing errors, accidents, and infections, and report concerns immediately.
- Understand testing values and their relation to patient status, taking appropriate next steps.
- Strive to exceed customer expectations and meet the department work schedule.
Clinical Excellence/Patient Education
- Understand inpatient and outpatient specialty procedures and comply with precertification requirements.
- Seek direction from providers regarding illness-related calls.
- Maintain inventory for clinical supplies.

QualificationsEDUCATION:
-Graduate of an accredited RN nursing program. BSN preferred.
EXPERIENCE:
-Previous clinical experience in behavioral health preferred.
LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION:
-A valid Iowa nursing license, nationally accepted medical assistant certification, and current BLS certification required; certifications must be maintained.
-Valid driver's license for work-related driving.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
-Fluent in English, with multicultural sensitivity.
-Basic computer skills (Microsoft Office).
-Customer/patient focused with critical thinking skills.
-Ability to use usual and customary equipment for the position.
