Overview
Performs a variety of clinical duties and is responsible for assisting the physician with direct and indirect patient care for children aged 0-18 in a Pediatric behavioral clinic. Tasks include preparing patients for examinations, treatments, diagnostic and laboratory procedures, patient education, and minor surgical procedures. Performs other administrative and clinical tasks as required.

Responsibilities
Clinical Excellence/Patient Care
- Manage and coordinate ongoing professional relationships with referring PCP providers, therapists, schools, and other community resources.
- Possess strong communication skills, both in person and by phone.
- Provide thorough education on psychotropic medication uses, indications, risks, benefits, and adverse effects.
- Provide phone triage, coordinate communication between patient caregivers and providers, maintain accurate documentation, and communicate appropriate follow-up recommendations.
- Coordinate with insurance companies to complete prior authorizations for medications or procedures.
- Answer questions and provide education to patients and families regarding health maintenance and medical illnesses, within scope and licensure.
- Document information accurately in the electronic health record, complete patient forms, and request medical records or correspondence as needed.
- Schedule referrals for specialists or outpatient services, completing necessary forms or requisitions.
- Assist providers with examinations, procedures, emergencies, and specimen collection, including administration of medications under supervision.
- Prioritize patient and workplace safety by preventing errors, accidents, and infections, and report concerns immediately.
- Understand testing values and their relationship to patient status, taking appropriate next steps.
- Strive to improve quality and customer service, exceeding expectations.

Clinical Excellence/Patient Education
- Understand inpatient and outpatient specialty procedures and ensure compliance with precertification requirements.
- Seek guidance from providers regarding illness-related calls.
- Maintain inventory of clinical supplies.

- Understand compliance requirements for federally funded healthcare programs and report concerns appropriately.
- Participate in emergency response as part of the hospital's Incident Command System, performing multiple tasks if necessary.
Qualifications
Education:
- Graduate of an accredited RN program.
- BSN preferred.
Experience:
- Previous clinical experience in behavioral health preferred.
Licensure/Certification:
- State of Iowa nursing license and nationally accepted medical assistant certification required; licenses and certifications must be maintained.
- Current BLS certification or obtain within three months of hire.
- Valid driver’s license if driving for work-related reasons.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Fluent in English (reading, writing, speaking).
