The RN Clinical Charge Nurse is responsible for directing and overseeing the daily activities of the unit on an assigned shift to ensure the safe delivery of care. The Charge Nurse often takes modified patient care assignments and practices in a clinical environment supported by Nurse Managers and leadership through the WellStar Shared Governance Model. The practice framework is guided by the WellStar Professional Nursing Practice Model, evidence-based practice, and research. RN competencies are derived from these models and supported by the WellStar Core Competencies.
The RN Clinical Charge Nurse is a proactive member of an interdisciplinary team of licensed and unlicensed caregivers, ensuring patients, families, and significant others receive high-quality, safe, and individualized care. Expectations include accountability, responsibility, effective teamwork, delegation, communication, respect, personal development, and fostering growth among team members.
This role contributes to establishing and maintaining practices that ensure excellence in patient care, efficient resource use, and leadership tasks such as staff scheduling, unit patient flow, clinical expertise for concerns, physician rounding, committee involvement, survey readiness, and other tasks assigned by the manager to ensure departmental effectiveness.
The RN Clinical Charge Nurse serves as a resource for operational knowledge and hospital awareness, supporting the growth and development of team members, building rapport between nurses and physicians, and modeling professional nursing practice in accordance with the Georgia Professional Nurse Practice Act and the American Nurses Association's Code of Ethics. The individual upholds the voice of the patient, system policies, and service excellence goals, utilizing advanced clinical expertise to support safe, culturally competent, and age-appropriate patient care.
