Job Summary

The RN Clinical Charge Nurse is responsible for directing and overseeing the daily activities of the unit on an assigned shift to ensure the safe delivery of care. The Charge Nurse often takes modified patient care assignments and practices in a clinical environment supported by Nurse Managers and the WellStar Shared Governance Model. This role involves leadership, coordination, and collaboration to promote high-quality, safe, patient-centered care, aligning with the WellStar Professional Nursing Practice Model and evidence-based practices. The RN Clinical Charge Nurse is a proactive team member who ensures effective patient care, resource utilization, and staff development, including tasks such as staff scheduling, unit flow management, clinical expertise, physician rounding, and committee involvement. The role also involves building rapport between nurses and physicians, serving as a role model, and upholding nursing standards per the Georgia Professional Nurse Practice Act and the American Nurses Association Code of Ethics. The nurse supports system policies and promotes culturally aware, age-appropriate patient care.

Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions
  • Monitor equipment inventory and utilization to ensure staff have necessary tools.
  • Participate in resource planning and staffing during shortages or surges.
  • Plan for patient care across the continuum, develop protocols, and improve practice outcomes.
  • Make patient assignments considering patient acuity and staff experience.
  • Review discharge and length of stay daily.
  • Round with physicians/surgeons and coordinate bed assignments.
  • Consult with Nursing Administration on bed flow and availability.
  • Perform or oversee the nursing process, ensuring individualized, evidence-based care.
  • Partner with patients and families for relationship-based, patient-centered care.
  • Ensure safety and quality standards are met, including safety rounds in the Emergency Department.
  • Communicate effectively with the healthcare team and promote interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Serve as a preceptor or mentor to staff and students.
  • Promote evidence-based practice, participate in research, and support performance improvement initiatives.
Minimum Education

Graduate of an accredited nursing program (Associate Degree/Diploma or BSN preferred).

Licenses and Certifications
  • BLS, RN license (single state or multi-state compact), ACLS (preferred), and other certifications required upon hire.
Experience

Minimum 1 year nursing experience required; 2 years preferred. Experience as relief charge nurse and clinical expertise preferred.
