The RN Clinical Charge Nurse is responsible for directing and overseeing the daily activities of the unit on an assigned shift to ensure the safe delivery of care. The Charge Nurse is a caregiver who often takes on modified patient care assignments. They practice in a clinical environment managed by Nurse Managers and other leaders, supported through the WellStar Shared Governance Model. The practice framework is guided by the WellStar Professional Nursing Practice Model, evidence-based practice, and research. RN competencies are derived from these models and supported by the WellStar Core Competencies.
The RN Clinical Charge Nurse is a proactive member of an interdisciplinary team of licensed and unlicensed caregivers who ensure that patients, families, and significant others receive high-quality, safe, and individualized care. Expectations include accountability, responsibility, authority, effective teamwork, delegation, communication, respect, personal development, and team development.
The role involves establishing and maintaining practices that ensure excellence in patient care, efficient resource use, and leadership tasks such as staff scheduling, unit patient flow management, clinical expertise, physician rounding, committee participation, survey readiness, and other tasks assigned by the manager. These are essential for the smooth and effective functioning of the department.
The RN Clinical Charge Nurse serves as a resource for operational knowledge and hospital awareness. They assist in the growth and development of team members, fostering departmental skill sets and inspiring expertise. They build rapport between nurses and physicians to enhance service and serve as role models.
All RN Clinical Charge Nurses are expected to be licensed, knowledgeable, and uphold nursing practices as outlined by the Georgia Professional Nurse Practice Act, implementing the Scope of Practice and Code of Ethics Standards by the American Nurses Association. They uphold patient advocacy, system policies, and service excellence, utilizing advanced clinical expertise to support safe, age-appropriate, and culturally sensitive patient care.
Graduate of an accredited nursing program (Associate Degree/Diploma or BSN preferred). Licenses include BLS, RN (single or multi-state), and ACLS (preferred).
Minimum 1-year nursing experience required; 2 years preferred. Experience as relief charge with clinical expertise is preferred. Skills include clinical proficiency, communication, leadership, and teamwork.
