Job summary

A leading healthcare provider in New York is seeking a skilled Anesthetist to administer anesthesia during surgical procedures and monitor patients throughout their operations. The ideal candidate will be a graduate of an accredited R.N. program with at least five years of nursing experience, possessing excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to perform physical tasks required in a fast-paced surgical environment.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of five (5) years as a Registered Nurse.

  • Ability to perform physical tasks including lifting up to 75 pounds.

Job description

Overview

Administers intravenous, spinal, and other anesthetics to render persons insensible to pain during surgical procedures.

Responsibilities

  1. Prepare operating room with necessary anesthetics and review patient medical history.
  2. Prepare prescribed solutions for intravenous injections and administer.
  3. Assemble machine for administering gas and test it to ensure proper functioning.
  4. Prepare patient position on operating table according to the type of operation to be performed.
  5. Study physical findings of preoperative examination to determine probable effects of anesthetic on patient.
  6. Ensure that blood of proper types is available for emergency use.
  7. Monitor patient’s blood pressure, respiration, and pulse during the procedure, and watch for significant physical changes.
  8. Explain procedures to patients to secure cooperation and bolster confidence.
  9. Maintain patient in surgical anesthetic state, adjusting oxygen and gas flow, and keeping air tubes in position as necessary.
  10. Keep the surgeon informed of the patient’s condition.
  11. Take necessary remedial actions, such as aspiration of the throat and administration of oxygen.
  12. Record the condition of the patient, along with all pertinent information, on the patient’s chart.
  13. Assist in moving the patient from the operating room to the recovery room or floor.
  14. Disassemble equipment and clean the work area, or direct others to perform these functions.
  15. Remove supplies and accessories to the supply room. Clean and sterilize instruments and equipment according to standard procedures.
  16. Maintain records of each anesthetic administered.
  17. Perform other duties as requested.

Qualifications

Education: Graduate of an accredited New York State R.N. program; a BSN degree is preferred.

Experience: Minimum of five (5) years as a Registered Nurse.

Knowledge and Skills: Good interpersonal skills.

Physical Requirements: The position requires prolonged periods of standing, reaching, and walking throughout the workday. Must be able to stoop, bend, lift, and carry items weighing up to 75 pounds.
