Job description

Overview

Administers intravenous, spinal, and other anesthetics to render persons insensible to pain during surgical procedures.

Responsibilities
  1. Prepare operating room with necessary anesthetics and review patient medical history.
  2. Prepare prescribed solutions for intravenous injections and administer.
  3. Assemble machine for administering gas and test it to ensure proper functioning.
  4. Prepare patient position on operating table according to type of operation to be performed.
  5. Study physical findings of preoperative examination to determine probable effects of anesthetic on patient.
  6. Ensure blood of proper types is available for emergency use.
  7. Monitor patient’s blood pressure, respiration, and pulse during procedure, and watch for significant physical changes.
  8. Explain procedure to patient to secure cooperation and bolster confidence.
  9. Maintain patient in surgical anesthetic state, adjusting oxygen, gas flow, and keeping air tubes in position as necessary.
  10. Keep surgeon informed of patient’s condition.
  11. Take necessary remedial actions, such as aspiration of throat and administration of oxygen.
  12. Record condition of patient and all pertinent information on patient’s chart.
  13. Assist in moving patient from operating room to recovery room or floor.
  14. Disassemble equipment and clean work area or direct others to perform these functions.
  15. Remove supplies and accessories to supply room. Clean and sterilize instruments and equipment according to standard procedures.
  16. Maintain records of each anesthetic administered.
  17. Perform other duties as requested.
Qualifications

Education: Graduate of an accredited New York State R.N. program, a BSN degree preferred.

Experience: Minimum five (5) years as a RN.

Knowledge and Skills: Good interpersonal skills.

Physical Requirements: Position requires prolonged periods of standing, reaching, walking throughout the working day. Must be able to stoop, bend, lift, and carry items weighing up to 75 pounds.
