Job summary

Jobtailor in Houston, TX seeks a seasoned Risk Control Specialist to evaluate risks on construction, Inland Marine and energy accounts, and partner with Underwriting, Claims and Brokers to service a profitable portfolio. You will conduct on-site assessments and write detailed risk reports to support risk controls.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or graduate degree in EHS or related technical field.
  • Certified in ASP/CSP/ARM/CFPS preferred.
  • Five years of experience in safety or risk management.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and negotiation skills.
  • Valid driver's license and state-specific safety certification.

Responsibilities

  • Provide the Underwriter with account knowledge related to hazards, controls, and management.
  • Evaluate how a company identifies and manages inherent risk factors.
  • Differentiate the account from others in similar classes of business.
  • Maintain a consistent field presence, spending 20%–50% of time onsite with customers.
  • Travel to customers may entail long-distance, overnight or multi-night trips.
  • Partner with Underwriting to select, retain, and grow a profitable book of business.
  • Build and maintain relationships with Underwriting, Claim, Risk Control Specialists, and Brokers to service customers as a team.
  • Evaluate and complete risk assessments for moderate to high complex construction, Inland Marine, and Energy accounts.
  • Write technically detailed reports with clear risk assessments and recommendations.
  • Identify customer needs through loss analysis to provide Risk Control services.
  • Identify uncontrolled exposures to influence corrective actions to mitigate loss.
  • Provide risk mitigation solutions using our resources.
  • Stay current with technical subjects, regulatory environment and emerging issues.
  • Create a valued customer experience with each assessment and service encounter.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Job description

Responsibilities

  • Travel to customers may entail long-distance, overnight travel, and/or multi-night trips depending on the needs of the business and alignment with territory and/or geography.
  • Partner and have joint ownership with Underwriting to select, retain, and grow a profitable book of business.
  • Build and maintain productive relationships with Underwriting, Claim, Risk Control Specialists, and Brokers to service customers as a unified team.
  • Evaluate and complete risk assessment evaluations for moderate to high complex construction, Inland Marine (builder’s risk, contractor’s equipment, and property), and Energy accounts with potential for severe losses, multi-location companies, and larger fleet exposures.
  • Write technically detailed reports that communicate a clear assessment of risk and effectively articulate recommendations.
  • Discover and evaluate customer needs through loss analysis and customer readiness in order to provide Risk Control products and services to help control losses.
  • Identify uncontrolled exposures to influence the customer to make improvements and take corrective actions to mitigate the potential for loss.
  • Provide solutions to assist the customer in risk mitigation through the use of our extensive span of resources.
  • Stay current with technical subject matters, regulatory environment and emerging issues.
  • Create a valued customer experience through each assessment and service encounter.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's or graduate degree in environmental health and safety, engineering, construction management, basic sciences and related technical fields.
  • Strong level knowledge of insurance industry and business acumen.
  • Recognized relevant certifications (such as ASP, CSP, ARM, CFPS).
  • Technical aptitude, detail oriented.
  • Superior communication skills - both written and verbal.
  • Ability to quickly establish credibility and rapport with all others.
  • Experience working in a collaborative environment.
  • Critical thinking skills.
  • Influencing skills that effectively drive business needs.
  • Negotiating change to achieve optimal outcomes.
  • Ability to give and receive coaching and feedback.
  • Five years of experience in safety, risk control/management, or a related field, such as occupational/environmental health and safety, science, engineering, construction, manufacturing, or relevant military experience.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Must have or be able to attain appropriate certification to meet state-specific requirements, where applicable.
