Job Summary
The Rigging Engineer is based to Bechtel Equipment Operations, Inc. and reports to a Certified Rigging Engineer in the office or a Project Field Engineer at the project location. The role provides operational and technical support to assigned construction engineers and construction personnel, including craft, regarding rigging‑related construction processes, procedures, and requirements. The selected candidate will be temporarily assigned to the Energy GBU Houston City West office, with the expectation of relocation to multiple project locations throughout the United States.
Major Responsibilities
- Attends constructability meetings at the FEED/design phases of projects to provide rigging execution plans, including foundation leave‑outs and structure holds.
- Prepares rigging plans, calculations, and specifications for rigging material and lift equipment.
- Monitors compliance of rigging operations with approved plans and applicable codes.
- Assesses and plans crane and heavy transport requirements and assists in preparation of the Construction Equipment Schedule (CES) and budgets.
- Serves as a point of contact for preparation of lift and haul plans.
- Assists the Rigging Superintendent by providing design support necessary for rigging plan development.
- Monitors general project rigging work operations to ensure execution in accordance with approved plans.
- Reviews and approves medium and critical lift plans submitted by subcontractors and forwards them for Certified Rigging Engineer review and approval prior to work start.
- Selects crane(s), lifting hardware, and equipment necessary for safe execution of medium, heavy, and critical lifts.
- Provides operational and technical direction to rigging crews and other discipline construction field engineers and personnel regarding rigging processes, procedures, and requirements, and may provide operational guidance to senior management.
- Maintains contact with engineering regarding plant layout, foundation design, vessel/module designs, lift provisions, and load suitability.
- Works closely with area superintendents and field engineers on constructability, equipment requirements, scheduling, ground preparations, temporary facilities, crane pads, haul routes, site sterilization, crane layout, sequencing, and lift plan approval.
- Assists with maintaining contact with Traffic & Logistics regarding feasibility of heavy/oversize haul, barging/heavy‑lift shipping, marine operations, dock facilities, and haul routes.
- Assists with maintaining contact with Subcontracts regarding scope and technical reviews for lifting and heavy/oversize transport works.
- Collaborates with vendors and subcontractors, providing expertise in meetings and reviews concerning subcontract lifting and heavy oversized site transport execution.
- Works closely with safety personnel on rigging‑related safety procedures and requirements.
- Assesses technical proposals of subcontractor heavy haul and heavy lift bid packages.
Education and Experience Requirements
- Engineering degree (preferably civil or mechanical) from a 4‑year accredited university.
Required Knowledge and Skills
- 4+ years of experience in construction rigging engineering discipline.
- Industry understanding and experience in engineering for lifting equipment, heavy lift cranes, specialized cranes, alternative heavy lifting systems, rigging equipment, transport/transfer of equipment, marine works, soil mechanics, load distribution systems, and structural design including ASME B30.20 BTH‑1.
- Advanced broad‑based theoretical knowledge in lifting/hauling equipment and techniques.
- Knowledge of applicable codes and legislation governing lifting devices, rigging, and heavy haul transport operations.
- Intermediate ability in structural design as it relates to lifting equipment and basic structures.
- Understanding of soil mechanics as it relates to lifting equipment and advanced ability in matting design to distribute crane loads into the ground.
- Advanced CAD drafting ability (AutoCAD preferable).
- Knowledge and understanding of the application and requirements of the Project Environmental, Safety & Health (ES&H) Handbook and the Bechtel Core Processes as they relate to area of responsibility.
- Knowledge of Bechtel’s “Zero Accidents” safety program.
