Job summary

Summit Bechtel Reserve in Glen Jean, West Virginia, seeks a highly qualified NRA-certified instructor to lead and mentor participants across shooting venues, ensuring safety and high-quality instruction.

Responsibilities include coaching Merit Badge students, maintaining firearms and equipment, submitting reports, and tracking completions with 100% accountability. Housing and uniform provided; work weeks are 45–55 hours.

Qualifications

• Minimum age 21+
• NRA Instructor certs required (training provided)
• RSO cert required (training provided)
• Experience in competitive shooting or hunting preferred
• Willing to undergo background screening
• Comfortable using Microsoft Teams for daily work communication

Job description

Position Overview

Instill proper knowledge, skills, and attitude in participants. Provide high quality instruction, direct leadership, and mentorship in all shooting venues.

Key Responsibilities

• Ensures range safety at all times
• Instructs and coaches Merit Badge students in a classroom or range environment
• 100% accountability of all firearms, ammunition, and equipment always
• Submits NRA Course reports correctly and accurately in a timely manor
• Electronically tracks merit badge completions correctly and accurately in a timely manor
• Maintain a clean, organized, inspected, neat, and safe work area
• Perform additional duties assigned by SBR leadership

• Abide by policies and procedures outlined in the SBR staff handbook

Qualifications

• Minimum age: 21+
• Required: NRA Certified Instructor (Rifle, Shotgun) (training provided)
• Required: NRA Certified Range Safety Officer (RSO) (training provided)
• Preferred: Experience in competitive shooting or hunting, any discipline
• Willing to become a registered Scouting America member (includes background screening)
• Comfortable using Microsoft Teams for daily work-related communication

Physical & Practical Requirements

• Ability to stand, walk, and hike up to 9 hours daily and ability to lift/move up to 70 pounds
• Complete the Annual Health and Medical Record, including height/weight guidelines
• Housing: 10'x12' platform tent in Staff Camp | Uniform: Summit Staff Uniform | Work Hours: 45-55
