The Summit Bechtel Reserve in Glen Jean, West Virginia seeks a dedicated NRA-certified instructor to lead merit badge shooting instruction with strong safety and mentorship qualities. You will oversee range safety, coach students, and maintain absolute accountability for firearms and gear in a camp setting.

Responsibilities include timely NRA report submission, electronic tracking of badge completions, and maintaining a clean work area.

Qualifications

• Must hold NRA Certified Instructor (Rifle, Shotgun) with training provided.
• Must hold NRA Certified Range Safety Officer (RSO) with training provided.
• 21+ years of age or older.
• Experience in competitive shooting or hunting preferred.
• Willing to undergo background screening for Scouting America.
• Comfortable using Microsoft Teams for daily work communications.

• Instructs and coaches Merit Badge students in classroom or range environment.
• 100% accountability of all firearms, ammunition, and equipment.
• Submits NRA Course reports correctly and timely.
• Electronically tracks merit badge completions accurately and timely.
• Maintain a clean, organized, inspected, neat, and safe work area.
• Perform additional duties assigned by SBR leadership.
• Abide by policies and procedures outlined in the SBR staff handbook.

Position Overview

Instill proper knowledge, skills, and attitude in participants. Provide high quality instruction, direct leadership, and mentorship in all shooting venues.

Key Responsibilities

• Ensures range safety at all times
• Instructs and coaches Merit Badge students in a classroom or range environment
• 100% accountability of all firearms, ammunition, and equipment always
• Submits NRA Course reports correctly and accurately in a timely manor
• Electronically tracks merit badge completions correctly and accurately in a timely manor
• Maintain a clean, organized, inspected, neat, and safe work area
• Perform additional duties assigned by SBR leadership
• Abide by policies and procedures outlined in the SBR staff handbook

Qualifications

• Minimum age: 21+
• Required: NRA Certified Instructor (Rifle, Shotgun) (training provided)
• Required: NRA Certified Range Safety Officer (RSO) (training provided)
• Preferred: Experience in competitive shooting or hunting, any discipline
• Willing to become a registered Scouting America member (includes background screening)
• Comfortable using Microsoft Teams for daily work-related communication

Physical & Practical Requirements

• Ability to stand, walk, and hike up to 9 hours daily and ability to lift/move up to 70 pounds
• Complete the Annual Health and Medical Record, including height/weight guidelines
• Housing: 10'x12' platform tent in Staff Camp | Uniform: Summit Staff Uniform | Work Hours: 45-55
