Job description

About Redefine Alliance:
At Redefine Alliance, we’re building an economy that works. For everyone.

When businesses have the capital and capacity to grow — and when employers, funders, government, and community work together — people can move from economic exclusion toward economic autonomy.

We discover and back social entrepreneurs across the United States that employ people striving to overcome employment barriers like homelessness or incarceration. These mission-driven businesses, called employment social enterprises (ESEs), exist because they see untapped talent in their communities for the strengths they hold, not the barriers they’ve faced.

That’s why Redefine Alliance invests in their businesses, so we can help push their impact further, faster. We pair our grantmaking with capacity-building support, create space for employment social enterprise leaders to learn together, and sponsor state and federal policies that help shift perspectives. Because we believe that our economy works best when it works for everyone.

Since 1997, Redefine has invested in 399 ESEs in 44 states and D.C., which have generated over $4 billion in revenue and employed more than 176,000 people.

The Role

The Revenue and Grants Accountant manages the accounting and finance functions associated with grants and revenue. This role calls for a highly organized individual, a critical thinker and someone attentive to detail. Excellent communication skills and the ability to effectively manage multiple priorities and competing deadlines are crucial in this role. This opportunity is ideal for someone who is proactive in improving processes and procedures, and eager to grow strategic, finance and accounting expertise. The key focus of this role at Redefine Alliance is to provide fiscal stewardship over Redefine Alliance’s grants and donations.

The Responsibilities
Grants Management
  • Manage the fiscal implementation of philanthropic and government grants, partnering with Program colleagues to maintain grant budgets and forecasts, monitor spending against budget, and support timely and accurate financial reporting throughout the grant lifecycle.
  • Thoroughly and accurately identify, track, and record grant expenditures.
  • Prepare and submit government grant and contract invoices and related financial reports, ensuring accuracy, compliance with funding requirements, and adherence to established submission deadlines.
  • Analyze, reconcile and forecast all restricted and unrestricted revenues for internal and external stakeholders on a timely basis.
  • Work directly with Program and Finance leadership to analyze grant spending and forecasts and communicate projected funding surpluses, deficits, and other significant variances to internal stakeholders.
  • Support the development of grant proposals and budgets by providing financial information, analysis, and other assistance as needed.
Revenue & General Accounting
  • Perform daily accounting functions related to revenue of $25M-$30M annually: track incoming wires, prepare invoices for multi-year grants and pledges, and post all revenue related transactions in NetSuite.
  • Analyze and reconcile General Ledger revenue and receivables accounts; prepare monthly Accounts Receivable aging reports.
  • Work with fundraising colleagues to conduct monthly revenue reconciliations between accounting and fundraising systems.
  • Prepare monthly wage allocation entries and bank reconciliations, participate in other month-end and period-end close activities, and support other general accounting functions, transactions, and projects as needed.
  • Enforce and maintain internal controls and implement processes to improve efficiencies.
  • Work with finance colleagues to design and implement any upgrades and refinements to existing financial systems.
  • Support government monitoring reviews and the annual financial audit, including preparation of required financial documentation and revenue-related audit schedules.
Grants & Organizational Compliance
  • Support ongoing compliance with government grant and contract requirements, maintaining required documentation and coordinating recurring compliance filings and submissions in accordance with established deadlines.
  • Manage multi-state business and nonprofit compliance activities, maintaining a tracker of deadlines and coordinating with registered agents and other compliance vendors to ensure required registrations, renewals, filings, insurance, and other state-specific requirements are completed accurately and on time, both for ongoing operations and prior to entering new markets.
The Culture

Every team member at Redefine Alliance has an impact, with the ability to influence and iterate on our strategy. We balance autonomy with collaboration, leading with learning, and innovation with expertise. We listen, ask questions, and challenge the status quo and each other to uncover solutions that move us all to a better tomorrow.

Redefine Alliance is proud to be an equal opportunity employer. Our different experiences, backgrounds, and stories are our strength. We know that an equitable, inclusive, and diverse workplace makes us more effective, innovative and agile. We welcome and will consider qualified applicants for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender perception or identity, national origin, age, marital status, protected veteran status, disability status or arrest and conviction history. EEO is the Law. Redefine Alliance welcomes all.

The Perks
  • 13 paid holidays, Summer Fridays, and ample paid time off
  • 16 weeks fully paid parental leave for birth parents and 8 weeks for non-birth parents
  • A generous dollar-for-dollar retirement plan match up to 4% of your base compensation
  • Opportunities to learn continuously by building your skills and broadening your perspectives at conferences, workshops, and more
  • Competitive, comprehensive benefits package
  • Flexible working schedules, support for big life events, and home office equipment for an ergonomic working space
Position Location and Pay Range

San Francisco Bay Area preferred but open to remote. The San Francisco Bay Area salary range for this position is $86,817 – $108,521. The range will be adjusted according to the candidate's location.

  • Ability to work independently, with some degree of flexibility and ambiguity.
  • Enjoy working as part of a team, exchanging insights and following up on team members’ input.
