Job description

The Public School Employees' Retirement System (PSERS) is seeking a Retirement Technician Trainee to join the team and provide essential services to our valued members. This role focuses on maintaining accurate data in member accounts and communicating with members and employers to ensure the validity of information on accounts across all systems.

This role focuses on learning how to evaluate retirement information and ensure accurate processing of member and employer data. As a Retirement Technician Trainee, you will perform the following duties:



  • Data Review: Review member and employer account data to identify issues and needed corrections

  • Benefit Calculations: Calculate estimates, adjustments, refunds, and related retirement values

  • System Accuracy: Verify system responses to ensure actions taken have processed correctly

  • Communication: Correspond with members and employers to clarify missing or incorrect information

  • Technical Learning: Learn and use multiple computer applications and tools to complete tasks

  • Process Support: Support various operational areas based on system and legislative needs

Work Schedule and Additional Information:


  • Full-time employment (37.5 hours per week)

  • Work Hours are 7:30am to 3:30, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.

  • These positions are located in Harrisburg, PA and will require the selected candidate to report to the office in Harrisburg up to 3 days a week.

  • Note: This is a trainee position. Following the successful completion of twelve-month training program, candidate will be promoted to a Retirement Technician.

  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time. This position will be report to the office in Harrisburg up to 3 days a week and be able to telework 2 days a week, based on operational needs. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed Internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Harrisburg. The ability to telework is subject to change at any time. Additional details may be provided during the interview.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:


  • Three years of experience in advanced clerical or technical work which includes or is supplemented by either one year of experience applying basic computer skills and techniques or three (3) credits in computer basics and techniques; or

  • Associate Degree that includes or is supplemented by three (3) credits of computer basics and techniques; or

  • Any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training which includes one year of advanced clerical or technical work applying basic computer skills and techniques or three (3) credits of computer basics and techniques.


Other Requirements:

  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.

This position is subject to the promotion provisions of a collective bargaining agreement or memorandum of understanding.

  • Reassignment (Only current civil service employees in the same agency who hold the same or similar job title, with the same maximum salary, within the same occupational group or where there is a logical career movement, will qualify for reassignment.)

  • Voluntary Demotion

  • Reinstatement (Former civil service employees may only be reinstated to the job title from which they resigned. Current civil service employees are not eligible through reinstatement.)

  • Transfer (Only current civil service employees who hold the same job title will qualify for transfer to another agency.)

You must meet the minimum experience and training requirements for this position, regardless of the option used to apply or next lower class.


Eligibility for Promotion Without Examination (PWOE)


  • Class Restrictions for Promotion Without Examination Only - You must have or have held regular civil service status in one of the following classifications:

    • Clerical Assistant 2

    • We will also consider applications from current Commonwealth employees in pay scale group ST03 for which there is a logical occupational, functional, or career developmental relationship to this position. All applicants must meet the minimum experience and training requirements.



  • Employees who previously held regular civil service status in the job title of the position being filled are also eligible for promotion without examination.

  • The promotion without examination requirements are issued in accordance with merit system employment regulations.

    • Meritorious service is defined as (a) the absence of any discipline above the level of written reprimand during the 12 months preceding the closing date of the posting, and (b) the last regular or probationary performance evaluation showing an overall rating of satisfactory or higher.



  • Applicants must have a minimum of one year in the next lower class(es) by the posting closing date with no break in service.
