Job summary

Teachers' Retirement System of the State of Illinois is seeking a Benefits Counselor to provide factual information about benefits and retirement options to TRS members. The role involves teleconferences, in-house counseling, field conferences, and large group presentations to educate members on eligibility and retirement choices.

The position requires travel, evening work, and a valid driver’s license, with a strong knowledge of the Illinois Pension Code, TRIP, and related procedures.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in math, statistics, accounting, education, business or related field, or five years of progressive experience in lieu of a degree.
• Three years of progressive responsibility in a related field.
• Preferred experience with pensions, benefits and/or employee relations.
• Proficiency with Excel and ability to explain benefits calculations to members.

Responsibilities

• Explain TRS benefits and retirement options to members.
• Conduct teleconferences, in-house counseling, field conferences and group presentations.
• Prepare benefit estimates using Excel and STAR for various retirement scenarios.
• Schedule appointments for the Springfield and Lisle offices.
• Assist in training Call Center and Counseling staff.
