Job summary

UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, TX seeks a Pharmacy Technician to support pharmaceutical operations under moderate supervision. The role includes extemporaneous compounding, IV admixtures, and ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards.

Eligible candidates have at least 1 year of pharmacy experience, a high school diploma or equivalent, and required certifications (TSBP, BLS; PTCB preferred). The position offers comprehensive benefits and opportunities for growth.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
  • TSBP REG PHARMACY TECHNICIAN certification or be eligible upon hire.
  • BLS certification (AHA/ARC) required upon hire.
  • PTCB certification for sterile compounding is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Performs duties per organizational policies and infection control standards.
  • Coordinates daily workflow in assigned area and leads other technicians; performs extemporaneous compounding.
  • Performs IV calculations and prepares IV admixtures using aseptic technique; handles IV chemotherapy.
  • Audits and signs out all controlled substances per state and federal guidelines; tracks inventory and discrepancies.
  • Assists with ordering, managing and monitoring drug inventory with fiscal responsibility.
  • Provides prompt, courteous service and handles calls; participates in training and orientation.

JOB DUTIES
  • Performs job responsibilities in accordance with organizational and departmental policies, procedures, performance improvement objectives and environmental and infection control standards.
  • Coordinates daily workflow in assigned area and provides leadership to other technicians. Performs extemporaneous compounding. Repackages bulk medications into unit dose per departmental policy and procedure. Enters charges and credits and restocks returns.
  • Makes good decisions, accepts responsibilities, and maintains competency in multiple areas.
  • Accepts duty as knowledge and training resource for specific areas of responsibility and works to improve these areas.
  • Accurately fills all orders, floor stock, and fill lists. Performs IV calculations and prepares all IV admixtures using proper aseptic technique. Handles all intravenous chemotherapy. Delivers medication on time.
  • Performs extemporaneous compounding. Repackages bulk medications (oral, injectable, etc) into unit dose per departmental policy and procedure. Enters charges/credits and restocks returns accurately and consistently.
  • Provides prompt and courteous service. Receives incoming calls and prioritizes bases on urgency or nature of requests.
  • Audits and signs out all controlled substances in accordance with state and federal guidelines and organizational policies. Identifies and corrects discrepancies and reports unusual usage pattern and trends. Completes medication area inspections. Removes and documents expired medications.
  • Assists with ordering, managing and monitoring drug inventory in a fiscally responsible manner and is cognizant of appropriate PAR levels in all medication storage areas.
  • Enhances personal growth and development. Participates in educational programs, in-services and meetings. Is a knowledge and training resource for specific areas of responsibility and routinely works to improve these areas.
  • Participates in new employee orientation and training.
  • Treats co-workers and organizational and departmental property and resources with respect. Maintains clean, orderly and stocked work environment.
  • Works and problem solves with minimal supervision.
  • Duties performed may include one or more of the following core functions: a) Directly interacting with or caring for patients; b) Directly interacting with or caring for human-subjects research participants; c) Regularly maintaining, modifying, releasing or similarly affecting patient records (including patient financial records); or d) Regularly maintaining, modifying, releasing or similarly affecting human-subjects research records.
  • If IV certified and scheduled to compound sterile admixtures, performs IV calculations and prepares al IV admixture using proper aseptic technique. Handles all intravenous chemotherapy.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
