Job summary

UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas seeks a part-time Pharmacy Technician to provide technical and supportive skills in pharmacy operations. The role requires rotating days and evenings with weekend work and the ability to stand for long periods.

On-site duties include compounding, inventory, and patient care support. The ideal candidate has a high school diploma, 1 year of pharmacy experience, and holds or will obtain TSBP registration with BLS or equivalent.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • At least 1 year of pharmacy or equivalent technician experience.
  • Current registration as a Pharmacy Technician or Pharmacy Intern upon hire; BLS certification.

Responsibilities

  • Operate under supervision to support pharmacy workflows and patient care.
  • Coordinate daily workflow, assist with compounding and inventory control.
  • Fill orders, manage unit dose packaging, and track charges and returns.
  • Handle IV admixtures if trained, and ensure accurate preparation and labeling.

JOB SUMMARY

Works under moderate supervision to provide technical and supportive skills in operation of pharmacy. The role is a part-time rotating shift both days and evenings. Weekend work is required. Must be able to stand and walk for long periods of time.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
Required
  • Education High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Experience 1 year of experience in pharmacy or equivalent technician
  • Licenses and Certifications (TSBP) REG PHARMACY TECNICIAN As a Registered Technician or Pharmacist Intern Upon Hire and BASIC LIFE SUPPORT Certification, course accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) Upon Hire
Preferred
  • Licenses and Certifications (PTCB) CERT COMPND STERILE PREP TECHN Pharmacy Technician Certification Board
JOB DUTIES
  • Performs job responsibilities in accordance with organizational and departmental policies, procedures, performance improvement objectives and environmental and infection control standards.
  • Coordinates daily workflow in assigned area and provides leadership to other technicians. Performs extemporaneous compounding. Repackages bulk medications into unit dose per departmental policy and procedure. Enters charges and credits and restocks returns.
  • Makes good decisions, accepts responsibilities, and maintains competency in multiple areas.
  • Accepts duty as knowledge and training resource for specific areas of responsibility and works to improve these areas.
  • Accurately fills all orders, floor stock, and fill lists. Performs IV calculations and prepares all IV admixtures using proper aseptic technique. Handles all intravenous chemotherapy. Delivers medication on time.
  • Performs extemporaneous compounding. Repackages bulk medications (oral, injectable, etc) into unit dose per departmental policy and procedure. Enters charges/credits and restocks returns accurately and consistently.
  • Provides prompt and courteous service. Receives incoming calls and prioritizes bases on urgency or nature of requests.
  • Audits and signs out all controlled substances in accordance with state and federal guidelines and organizational policies. Identifies and corrects discrepancies and reports unusual usage pattern and trends. Completes medication area inspections. Removes and documents expired medications.
  • Assists with ordering, managing and monitoring drug inventory in a fiscally responsible manner and is cognizant of appropriate PAR levels in all medication storage areas.
  • Enhances personal growth and development. Participates in educational programs, in-services and meetings. Is a knowledge and training resource for specific areas of responsibility and routinely works to improve these areas.
  • Participates in new employee orientation and training.
  • Treats co-workers and organizational and departmental property and resources with respect. Maintains clean, orderly and stocked work environment.
  • Works and problem solves with minimal supervision.
  • Duties performed may include one or more of the following core functions: a) Directly interacting with or caring for patients; b) Directly interacting with or caring for human-subjects research participants; c) Regularly maintaining, modifying, releasing or similarly affecting patient records (including patient financial records); or d) Regularly maintaining, modifying, releasing or similarly affecting human-subjects research records.
  • If IV certified and scheduled to compound sterile admixtures, performs IV calculations and prepares al IV admixture using proper aseptic technique. Handles all intravenous chemotherapy.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
