Job summary

UT Southwestern Medical Center is seeking a Pharmacy Technician to support the operation of the pharmacy under moderate supervision in Dallas, TX. The role requires a High School Diploma or equivalent and at least 1 year of pharmacy experience, plus an active pharmacy technician registration and BLS certification.

Preferred credentials include PTCB certification. You will coordinate daily workflow, perform extemporaneous compounding, manage IV admixtures, and ensure timely medication delivery

Qualifications

  • Education: High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience: 1 year of experience in pharmacy or equivalent technician.
  • Licenses/Certifications: (TSBP) REG PHARMACY TECHNICIAN; Basic Life Support Certification (AHA/ARC) Upon Hire.
  • Preferred Licenses/Certifications: (PTCB) CERT COMPND STERILE PREP TECHN Pharmacy Technician Certification Board.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates daily workflow and provides leadership to technicians.
  • Performs extemporaneous compounding and repackages bulk medications into unit doses.
  • Fills orders, performs IV calculations, and prepares IV admixtures using aseptic technique.
  • Delivers medications on time and assists with inventory management.

JOB DUTIES
  • Performs job responsibilities in accordance with organizational and departmental policies, procedures, performance improvement objectives and environmental and infection control standards.
  • Coordinates daily workflow in assigned area and provides leadership to other technicians. Performs extemporaneous compounding. Repackages bulk medications into unit dose per departmental policy and procedure. Enters charges and credits and restocks returns.
  • Makes good decisions, accepts responsibilities, and maintains competency in multiple areas.
  • Accepts duty as knowledge and training resource for specific areas of responsibility and works to improve these areas.
  • Accurately fills all orders, floor stock, and fill lists. Performs IV calculations and prepares all IV admixtures using proper aseptic technique. Handles all intravenous chemotherapy. Delivers medication on time.
  • Performs extemporaneous compounding. Repackages bulk medications (oral, injectable, etc) into unit dose per departmental policy and procedure. Enters charges/credits and restocks returns accurately and consistently.
  • Provides prompt and courteous service. Receives incoming calls and prioritizes bases on urgency or nature of requests.
  • Audits and signs out all controlled substances in accordance with state and federal guidelines and organizational policies. Identifies and corrects discrepancies and reports unusual usage pattern and trends. Completes medication area inspections. Removes and documents expired medications.
  • Assists with ordering, managing and monitoring drug inventory in a fiscally responsible manner and is cognizant of appropriate PAR levels in all medication storage areas.
  • Enhances personal growth and development. Participates in educational programs, in-services and meetings. Is a knowledge and training resource for specific areas of responsibility and routinely works to improve these areas.
  • Participates in new employee orientation and training.
  • Treats co-workers and organizational and departmental property and resources with respect. Maintains clean, orderly and stocked work environment.
  • Works and problem solves with minimal supervision.
  • Duties performed may include one or more of the following core functions: a) Directly interacting with or caring for patients; b) Directly interacting with or caring for human-subjects research participants; c) Regularly maintaining, modifying, releasing or similarly affecting patient records (including patient financial records); or d) Regularly maintaining, modifying, releasing or similarly affecting human-subjects research records.
  • If IV certified and scheduled to compound sterile admixtures, performs IV calculations and prepares al IV admixture using proper aseptic technique. Handles all intravenous chemotherapy.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
