Job description

Position Overview

Registered Respiratory Therapist responsible for providing comprehensive ventilatory support, airway management, and critical care interventions for patients with cardiopulmonary disorders at University Medical Center.

Responsibilities

• Conduct patient assessment and ventilator management including initial ventilatory settings, ventilator changes, and patient‑specific equipment selections.
• Perform arterial punctures, arterial line placement, and endo/nasotracheal suctioning.
• Assist with bronchoscopy, intubation, and code III response procedures.
• Administer aerosol/IPPB, CPT, oxygen therapy, incentive spirometry, aerochamber/inhaler therapy, and peak flow meter monitoring.
• Organize priorities and ensure safe operation of all equipment and supplies.
• Maintain accurate monitoring, documentation, and incident reporting to support quality improvement.
• Participate in planning and problem‑solving activities.
• Adhere to BSI policies and enforce infection‑control procedures using aseptic technique when required.
• Communicate treatment information clearly to patients and family members to promote understanding and participation.
• Maintain a safe environment by identifying and addressing unsafe conditions and using proper communication channels.

Qualifications

• Licensed Respiratory Therapist – Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners.
• Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) – National Board for Respiratory Care.
• Current American Heart Association BLS/CPR certification.
• Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.
• Current Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification.
