The role involves evaluating prescriptions, administering inhalants, operating ventilation and monitoring devices, and educating patients and staff while ensuring safety and quality in respiratory therapies.

Responsibilities

• Evaluates prescription, measures arterial blood gases, and checks patient information to assess condition and determine treatment requirements.
• Renders aerosol medications and treatments to patients for inhalation and positions patients to aid breathing.
• Determines method of administering inhalants and necessary precautions per physician orders.
• Sets up and operates devices (ventilators, gas administration, environmental control) to support respiration.
• Monitors treatment parameters (volume, gas concentration, humidity, temperature) and administers gases/drugs.
• Monitors physiological responses to therapy (vital signs, ABGs, blood chemistry).
• Performs chest physiotherapy to clear mucus and aids breathing exercises.
• Assists in pulmonary function testing to aid physician diagnosis.
• Observes equipment function and adjusts for optimum therapy results.
• Consults with physician in case of adverse reactions.
• Maintains patient charts and ensures equipment safety; orders repairs as needed.
• Provides patient education and support for chronic lung disease.
• Demonstrates respiratory care procedures to trainees and other staff.
• May care for premature infants, elderly, and trauma patients as needed.
• Performs additional duties as assigned
