Job summary

Nexus Children’s Hospital – Shenandoah seeks a Registered Respiratory Therapist to care for pediatric patients with complex respiratory and medical needs. You will assess patients, deliver treatments, respond to changes, and collaborate with physicians, nurses, patients, and families.

The role includes leading on-call coverage and occasional shifts at the Woodlands campus to support the department when the director is unavailable.

Qualifications

• Graduate of an accredited respiratory therapy program.
• Current Texas Respiratory Care Practitioner license.
• Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Three years of experience as a Registered Respiratory Therapist with mechanical ventilation experience.
• Intubation skills preferred.
• ACLS and PALS certifications preferred.
• Ability to obtain Nexus-approved Behavioral Intervention Certification within 90 days.

Responsibilities

• Assess respiratory status on admission and develop care plans.
• Provide ventilator management and diagnostic respiratory care.
• Administer respiratory medications and treatments.
• Respond to changes in patient condition and emergencies.
• Educate patients and families and participate in care conferences.
• Document progress, maintain records, and perform equipment checks.
• Serve as lead or on‑call therapist and cover Woodlands campus when needed.

In this role, you will assess respiratory status, deliver ordered treatments, respond to changes in patient condition, and work closely with physicians, nurses, patients, and families.

In this role, you will assess respiratory status, deliver ordered treatments, respond to changes in patient condition, and work closely with physicians, nurses, patients, and families.

What You’ll Do

• Assess patients on admission, develop respiratory care plans, and evaluate their response to treatment.
• Provide therapeutic and diagnostic respiratory care, including ventilator management and assessment of arterial blood gases, EKGs, and chest X-rays.
• Administer ordered respiratory medications and treatments.
• Recognize changes in patient condition and respond effectively in emergencies, including when another respiratory therapist is not immediately available.
• Educate patients and families and participate in care conferences and discharge planning.
• Communicate patient progress, concerns, and shift handoffs to the care team.
• Complete accurate clinical documentation, treatment records, quality controls, and equipment checks.
• Follow infection prevention practices, professional standards, and applicable regulations.
• Serve as the lead or on-call therapist when the department director is unavailable and provide coverage at the Woodlands campus when required.

Qualifications

• Graduate of an accredited respiratory therapy program.
• Current Respiratory Care Practitioner license in Texas.
• Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Three years of experience as a Registered Respiratory Therapist, including experience appropriate to the patient population and level of care. Mechanical ventilation experience is required.
• Intubation skills preferred.
• American Heart Association Advanced Life Support and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certifications preferred.
• Ability to obtain Nexus-approved Behavioral Intervention Certification within 90 days of hire and maintain it annually.
