Job summary

UPMC Hamot in Erie, PA, is seeking a compassionate Respiratory Therapist to join our multidisciplinary team. Under physician direction, you will provide respiratory therapy and life support across patient populations, using advanced equipment and evidence-based techniques to drive outcomes.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of a CoARC-approved Respiratory program.
  • Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) license in Pennsylvania.
  • BLS or CPR certification.
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) from NBRC.
  • Maintain NBRC certification if RRT credential was obtained after July 1, 2002.

Responsibilities

  • Assess patient condition and determine treatment requirements.
  • Administer inhalants and adjust per physician orders.
  • Assist in transporting ventilated patients and respond to emergencies.
  • Maintain patient charts with therapy information and order repairs.
  • Demonstrate respiratory care procedures to trainees and supervise students during training.
  • Set up and operate respiratory therapy equipment and ensure treatment parameters.
  • Monitor and adjust equipment for optimal therapy and safety checks.
  • Evaluate medical orders and interpret data to optimize outcomes.
  • Monitor physiologic responses to therapy and conduct pulmonary function tests.
  • Consult with physicians if adverse reactions occur.

Under the general direction of a physician and by prescription, you will provide respiratory therapy services and life support to patients with cardiopulmonary deficiencies and abnormalities. Your expertise will be utilized across all patient populations and service areas. UPMC Hamot is a 423-bed hospital offering a full complement of inpatient and outpatient services and serves as a regional referral hub and Level II Trauma Center. We’re excited to offer sign‑on bonuses for qualified Respiratory Therapists who join our team:

  • $7,500 for therapists with 0–1 year of experience with a 2-year full‑time commitment
  • $10,000 for therapists with 1+ years of experience with a 2-year full‑time commitment
Responsibilities
  • Assess patient condition and determine treatment requirements by reading prescriptions, measuring arterial blood gases, and reviewing patient information.
  • Choose the best method for administering inhalants and make necessary adjustments according to physician’s orders.
  • Assist in transporting mechanically ventilated patients and respond to emergency situations.
  • Maintain patient charts with identification and therapy information, and order repairs when needed.
  • Demonstrate respiratory care procedures to trainees and supervise students during training.
  • Set up and operate respiratory therapy equipment, ensuring it meets specified treatment parameters.
  • Monitor and adjust equipment to achieve optimal therapy results, and inspect equipment for safety and efficiency.
  • Evaluate medical orders and interpret clinical data to optimize patient outcomes.
  • Monitor patient’s physiological responses to therapy, perform bronchopulmonary drainage, assist with breathing exercises, and conduct pulmonary function tests.
  • Consult with physicians if adverse reactions occur.
Requirements
  • Graduate of a CoARC-approved Respiratory program.
  • Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) license in Pennsylvania.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) from the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC).
  • Maintain NBRC certification if RRT credential was obtained after July 1, 2002.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances
  • CPR certification based on AHA standards within 30 days of hire.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
  • Osteopathic Respiratory Care or Respiratory Care Practitioners (RCP).
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT).
  • Act 33, Act 34, and Act 73 FBI Clearance, all with renewal.
