Job description

Functions of the Position

• Conducts physician-prescribed respiratory care treatments and procedures.
• Performs regular patient rounds, checks oxygen supplies and equipment, documents activities, and completes patient charges.
• Reports patient and department information during shift changes.
• Sets up and monitors patients on continuous and non-continuous ventilation.
• Performs arterial puncture procedures, sample collection and analysis, quality control, proficiency testing, and demonstrates problem-solving skills.
• Functions as a member of the Code 3 team.
• Performs nasotracheal and tracheal suctioning.
• May perform cardiac compressions.
• Explains treatments, tests, and equipment procedures to patients.
• Records therapy details and patient responses in respiratory care records and patient charts.
• Processes respiratory care equipment, including cleaning, disinfecting, sterilizing, and packaging.
• Performs quality control on respiratory care equipment.
• Performs basic preventive maintenance and reports repairs to BioMed.
• Maintains a clean, safe, and organized department environment.
• Provides clinical instruction to respiratory care students.
• Adheres to department policies, procedures, quality assurance, and safety standards.
• Attends required meetings.
• Assists with deliveries and C-sections.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education: Graduated from an AMA-accredited respiratory therapist program.

License: Registered with the State of Missouri and maintains a current license.

Credentials: Registered or registry-eligible by the National Board for Respiratory Care.

Experience: Preferably two years as a registered/registry-eligible therapist.

Special Requirements

Patient Contact: Must have the knowledge and skills to provide age-appropriate care.

Machine Operation: Basic computer skills; understanding of respiratory care equipment including ventilators, CPAP/BiPAP, pulse oximetry, suction equipment, gas cylinders, regulators, and gauges.

Physical Requirements

Standing: Moderate amount for patient care and equipment handling.

Walking: Moderate amount for hospital rounds and patient teaching.

Lifting: Ability to push, pull, or move heavy equipment and assist with patient transfers.

Visual: Good eyesight for reading charts, drawing medications, recognizing patient distress, and reading monitors.

Hearing: Good hearing to respond to pages, codes, and communicate with team members and patients.

Speaking: Clear speech for effective communication with staff, patients, and visitors.
